EP08 成贻宾|写给未婚妻的信(英文版)Cheng Yibin Born in Baoying, Jiangsu Province, Cheng Yibin (1927-1949) received schooling at the Provincial Yangzhou Experimental Primary School, Nanjing Model High School, and entered National Central University in 1947. As the leading member of a progressive student club of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Cheng participated in the activities of the then-underground Communist Party of China and the New Democratic Youth Association to keep the university running for the coming liberation of Nanjing. He died on April 19, 1949, of serious injury after being beaten by the Nationalists at a demonstration held on April 1 against the scheme of war preparation in the name of peace-seeking of the Nationalist die-hards. A Letter to Fiancee, in Early 1944 Dear Fen: The words in my heart have been pent up for over a month now, and even without your urging, I can’t hold them in any longer. I want to tell you something, dear. Please stop what you are doing and take a few minutes to read a sweet letter from your lover in a faraway land! Leaving distant future aside, let’s talk about 1944: Three days of New Year holidays, give me a good opportunity to ponder over it. In these three days, I reflected on the past years, and at the same time, planned for the future. The past is the past, whether it’s sweet or sour. And we should pay attention to the future and grasp the present, so I think “self-revolution” is necessary. Here are ten principles which will make it possible for me to begin a new life this year: 1. Adopt a new outlook on life which is positive, optimistic and healthy. 2. Possess a wealth of knowledge, which is accumulated from careful observation and proper understanding. 3. Lead a regular life, being strict with myself and loyal to others. 4. Have a strong mind to make decisive decisions, biting the bullet and fighting with the dark ones tirelessly. 5. Be of noble character. Don’t deceive others and myself. 6. Be thrifty. What he can do alone, he must do by himself, and what he can save on expenses, he must save. 7. Be willing to help others. Whoever wants to begin a new life must be selfless and can always sacrifice themselves for the masses! 8. Be unpretentious. Never use grandiloquent language or high-sounding words. Instead, be practical and work hard to achieve career aspirations. 9. Love my country and nation. At the same time, love my parents, teachers, and anyone who is worthy of love. 10. Build a noble romance and be understanding and comforting with my lover. Fen, how do you feel about these principles? Are they too vague or too broad? Or perhaps they are too exaggerated? It is doubtless difficult for me to meet these requirements altogether at the same time, but I am willing to use them as my guiding principles and work hard to begin a “new life”!

EP06 吴光田|写给父母的信(英文版)Wu Guangtian Wu Guangtian (1907-1927) was born in Songjiang, Jiangsu Province. He attended Soochow Primary School before graduating and being admitted to The Third Middle School of Jiangsu Province after graduation. Shortly after, he transferred to the Affiliated Middle School of Southeast University in Nanjing and participated in the activities of the “Cooperative”, the peripheral organization of the Communist Youth League during his time in school. Afterwards, he enrolled in Southeast University. In 1925, Wu joined the Communist Youth League of China. In March 1927, he was arrested and killed by Sun Chuanfang’s forces. A Letter to Parents On the Afternoon of March 12th, 1927 Dear Mom and Dad: I hope this letter finds you well. I have written two letters to you since my arrival in Nanjing. Have you received and read them? The current situation here seems stable, although the business is sluggish, with stores open only for one or two hours. In the mornings, there are many soldiers on the streets, bustling about and recruiting civilians as laborers, and our teachers and students are no exception. More and more students have already left for their homes, and now there are only 17 or 18 students left in the university dormitory. Boiled water is no longer being supplied, so we need to serve ourselves, which has made life quite inconvenient. Yesterday afternoon, a bomb landed on the dormitory out of nowhere (it was stormy and there were no planes flying), causing panic for a while. Fortunately, no one was hurt. There are only a few professors present at school, and classes last no more than two hours per day. There are still over one hundred students here, and, for now, I will not make plans to go back home. If the school suspends classes, or any urgent matter arises, I will decide then. How have things been going lately in Songjiang County (translator’s note: Songjiang County is the author’s hometown)? Since the situation of the road between Shanghai and Hangzhou has improved, I wonder if things have been better back home. How’s everyone at home? I’m in good health at school, so please do not worry about me. I have written a letter to Brother Pan but haven’t heard from him yet. I’m wondering if he is safe and sound. Are our relatives still in the shelter? Have Mom and Sister Jiu been to Shanghai? Will the Spring Ritual of Sacrifice be on schedule? Please allow me to tell you more later. Wishing you good health and happiness.

A Letter from Prison: Last Words to My Father(1927) On the morning of March 17, 1927 Dear Father: Words fail me when it comes to expressing my pain. Here, I implore you not to burden yourself with adopting any children to carry on our family line after my death, as they could only bring trouble to the family as I did. And that may upset you all over again. In my humble opinion, our family’s assets are supposed to be entrusted to the government after you depart this life when living to a great age. And every year, a sponsorship might be received by a male and a female student to study agriculture in college, making it possible to fulfill my lifelong aspirations. Dear Father, I am sorry to become an unfilial son who fails to undertake his due responsibilities, but I still have a final request that you take care of Mr. Zhu Kongyang, a close friend of mine. Trouble you to as far as possible satisfy his needs.
