A Letter to Parents
On the Afternoon of March 12th, 1927
Dear Mom and Dad:
I hope this letter finds you well. I have written two letters to you since my arrival in Nanjing. Have you received and read them?
The current situation here seems stable, although the business is sluggish, with stores open only for one or two hours. In the mornings, there are many soldiers on the streets, bustling about and recruiting civilians as laborers, and our teachers and students are no exception. More and more students have already left for their homes, and now there are only 17 or 18 students left in the university dormitory. Boiled water is no longer being supplied, so we need to serve ourselves, which has made life quite inconvenient. Yesterday afternoon, a bomb landed on the dormitory out of nowhere (it was stormy and there were no planes flying), causing panic for a while. Fortunately, no one was hurt. There are only a few professors present at school, and classes last no more than two hours per day. There are still over one hundred students here, and, for now, I will not make plans to go back home. If the school suspends classes, or any urgent matter arises, I will decide then. How have things been going lately in Songjiang County (translator’s note: Songjiang County is the author’s hometown)? Since the situation of the road between Shanghai and Hangzhou has improved, I wonder if things have been better back home. How’s everyone at home? I’m in good health at school, so please do not worry about me.
I have written a letter to Brother Pan but haven’t heard from him yet. I’m wondering if he is safe and sound. Are our relatives still in the shelter?
Have Mom and Sister Jiu been to Shanghai? Will the Spring Ritual of Sacrifice be on schedule? Please allow me to tell you more later.
Wishing you good health and happiness.
Yours Sincerely,
Guangtian
