Although Fujian and Guangdong are neighboring provinces, there are many differences among them. Today, I will tell you about my experience of living in Guangdong as a Fujianese.
After I graduated from university, I went to Tencent's WeXin Group , which was my first time in Guangzhou. My first impression of Guangdong is that there are a lot of Cantonese speakers on the streets and a lot of people wearing flip-flops which felt very fresh to me. In the summer, Guangzhou is so hot and stuffy, and the temperature difference between day and night is so small that even when I get home from work after 10pm, it's still very hot.
As I live in Guangdong for a long time, I gradually realize the difference in the living habits of people in Guangdong and Fujian. Firstly, it's the food. Guangdong has a lot more delicacies than Fujian, such as roasted pigeon(烤乳鸽), Cantonese Steamed Milk Egg Pudding(双皮奶), etc, which are not found in Fujian, but Fujian has a wider variety of soups, and soup is a must-have for every family.
Secondly, the custom of sending red packets is not the same. In Guangdong, red packets are called lishui, and they are sent in many scenes. For example, married people have to give out red packets after Chinese New Year; when there are families going out, other families will send them red packets; no matter whether they are distant or close relatives, they will send out red packets during the Chinese New Year period; I once saw my friend received over 100 red packets during Chinese New Year, but the amount of each one was not expensive, ranging from 10-50. This custom is not at all like this in Fujian, we only send red packets to our important family members, ranging from 300-800 each time, and the amount is very big and the quantity is very small.
Besides that, there are a lot of scammers in some areas of Fujian, and I've gotten several scam calls every time when I've been home, but I've never gotten this kind of call in Guangdong.
As well as I realized that my peers in Guangdong, they watched Hong Kong dramas when they were children, but I used to watch Taiwanese idol dramas. Have you guys noticed that Fujianese have a bit of a Taiwanese accent? It's because we watched too many dramas as kids.
As a Fujianese, I like living in Guangdong, there is a lot of great food and the people are simple and honest. The only shortcoming is that the weather is really hot, you can only stay in the room and blow the air conditioner in summer.
I will take the express train back to Fujian tomorrow. I'll miss the food here.
This episode of the podcast ends here, see you next time bye-bye~!

下期再见~
