"Stories of Your Life" is a movie that I've always loved. I haven't read the novel yet, and lately, I've been struggling to get through many books. So, I decided to pick up this book as a light read.
Even the initial spark that led to my desire to learn English can be traced back to this movie. The concept that language can reshape the brain is just fascinating.
In the story, the female protagonist gains the ability to see time non-linearly, like the aliens she communicates with, after learning their language. She can simultaneously perceive the past, present, and future. Although humans are still confined to the present, her thoughts extend to any point in time.
At the moment she learns the alien language, the female protagonist sees her future unfold before her eyes. She envisions herself getting married to the man who will eventually abandon her, having a child with him, and tragically losing their daughter.
All these outcomes are laid out before her, even before the man proposes to her.
When the male lead finally asks her out, I don't know what she was thinking at that moment, but I do know that her response would require courage.
