Give and take
This is a book I recently came across, and the Chinese translation wasn't very appealing. It's the kind of book that you don't feel like picking up just by hearing its title. But surprisingly, the original English title is quite catchy —— "give and take".
This book takes a principle and breaks it down to explain it thoroughly. The core concept throughout the book is to be a giver, which is considered the best strategy in life.
While listening to it, I had two realizations:
Firstly, I noticed that many books follow a similar pattern of conveying a principle or message. If we only hear the conclusion of a book that presents a single idea, it might feel redundant or even be dismissed by some as unnecessary. However, I realized that human forgetfulness is quite significant. That's why there's a saying, "We hear many truths, yet still struggle to live a good life." The reason behind this is that a single idea contains profound wisdom and knowledge. Without a deep and comprehensive understanding, repeated contemplation, it's challenging to internalize it fully.
That's my insight regarding this principle.
Secondly, I compared the content of the book to my own behavior and realized that I might be more of a taker than a giver. This realization was quite shocking, but I believe that openly acknowledging it is the first step towards change. I feel that this book will influence my actions in the future. It has provided me with a new perspective for self-reflection, which is a positive outcome.
