Joannes Ferrer, known by his Chinese name Fan Tingzuo and courtesy name Mengchen, was born in 1817. He was an architectural designer, art educator, and a Spanish missionary. He was a key figure in the founding of T’ou-Sè-Wè Arts School. Fan Tingzuo arrived in Shanghai in 1847. He subsequently led the design of the Dongjiadu Cathedral and the Xujiahui Church Jesuit Residence in 1847 and 1851. He established a personal studio in Dongjiadu, which was moved to Xujiahui in 1851. After expansion, it also served as an art classroom where students, including Chinese ones, were taught sketching techniques. This studio became the predecessor of the T’ou-Sè-Wè Arts School. According to historical records, T’ou-Sè-Wè Arts School was the earliest institution in China to teach Western art. It provided instruction in various forms of Western painting and techniques, marking the first systematic introduction of European oil painting in China. T’ou-Sè-Wè Arts School was once praised by Xu Beihong as the “cradle of Western painting in China”.
