晁德莅,字敬庄,意大利人。1848年来华,在上海徐家汇传教,曾任圣伊纳爵公学校长,该校为徐汇公学前身(St. Ignatius College),教授了包括马相伯、李问渔在内的首批学生。晁德莅积极参与“江南科学计划”,负责其中的汉学部分。他精通汉语,熟读儒家经典,被誉为“汉学家”。他将部分中国古代著作及儒家经典翻译成拉丁文,并将这些译文收录在其拉丁文著作《中国文学历程》中。
Angelo Zottoli, also known by his courtesy name Jingzhuang, was an Italian who arrived in China in 1848. He engaged in missionary work in Xujiahui, Shanghai, and served as the principal of St. Ignatius College (which later became Xuhui Public School, teaching the first group of students, including Ma Xiangbo and Li Wenyu. Zottoli was actively involved in the “Plan for Sciences in Jiangnan”, taking charge of its Sinology segment. A scholar of the Chinese language, he was well-versed in Confucian classics and was known as a “Sinologist”. He translated several ancient Chinese texts and Confucian classics into Latin, and these translations were included in his Latin work, “Course of Chinese Literature”.
