Marc Dechevrens, a Jesuit priest and Swiss meteorologist, was born in 1845. As a self-taught scholar, he acquired skills in physics and meteorology at the Sorbonne University. In 1873, Dechevrens arrived in Shanghai, where he was responsible for geomagnetic operations. In 1876, he became the first director of the Zi-Ka-Wei Observatory. He established and improved the forecasting system, making it possible for Shanghai to have meteorological services for the first time. In 1879, when Shanghai was struck by a strong typhoon, Dechevrens predicted the typhoon by analyzing meteorological data from various coastal lighthouse stations and surrounding stations, marking the beginning of weather forecasting in China. In 1887, due to health reasons, he returned to Europe and spent his twilight years in Constantinople.
In 2012, on the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Zi-Ka-Wei Observatory, the World Meteorological Organization awarded the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau the International Century Climate Station certificate, in recognition of the Zi-Ka-Wei Observatory’s 140-year collection of climate data and its outstanding contribution to the global system of the World Meteorological Organization. Only two places in the world have received this honor, one of which is the Zi-Ka-Wei Observatory.
