徐宗泽,字润农,生于1886年,江苏青浦人,徐光启第十二世孙。19岁为秀才,赴罗马攻读文学、哲学和神学。中间曾回国任徐汇公学教授数年。留学期间先后获哲学博士、神学博士学位,于1921年学成归国。1923年任徐家汇藏书楼主任。兼任《圣教杂志》主编。抗日战争爆发后杂志停刊,专心致力于藏书楼工作,多年来搜集地方志2000余种,成为该楼藏书一大特色。同时,他指导启明女中和徐汇女中校务。两校女生,受其熏陶而学有成就者,为数众多。徐宗泽著有《中国天主教传教士概论》、《圣宠论》、《随思随笔》等。
Xu Zongze, known by his courtesy name Runnong, was born in 1886 in Qingpu, Jiangsu Province. He was a 12th-generation descendant of Xu Guangqi. At the age of 19, he became a Xiucai, that is, a successful candidate in the imperial examination, and went to Rome to study literature, philosophy, and theology. During his studies abroad, he briefly returned to China to serve as a professor at Xuhui Public School for several years. Xu earned doctoral degrees in both philosophy and theology, and in 1921, he returned to China after completing his studies. In 1923, he was appointed Director of Zi-Ka-Wei Bibliotheca as well as the chief editor of The Catholic Review. After the outbreak of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the journal ceased publication, and Xu devoted himself to the work of the library, where he spent many years collecting more than 2,000 kinds of local gazetteers, which is a significant feature of the library. He also oversaw the operations of Qiming Girls’ School and Xuhui Girls’ School. Under his influence, many of the students from these schools achieved remarkable success. Xu Zongze authored works such as An Introduction to Catholic Missionaries in China, On Grace, and Random Thoughts and Essays.
