In addition to family gatherings, many people enjoy playing mahjong or other games, continuing a tradition of fun and togetherness. Another beloved tradition is the giving of red envelopes or hongbao, which are filled with money and given to children and unmarried adults as a symbol of good luck and blessings for the coming year. It’s a time for families to express love and well-wishes to each other. Staying up late on Chinese New Year’s Eve, a tradition known as "shou sui," is also common. It is believed that staying awake throughout the night will bring longevity and good fortune.
