Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. With just days to spare [备用], congressional Republicans are hoping a new stopgap [停止中断] bill [议案] will keep the government open past a Friday deadline. NPR's Claudio Gursalis reports it's not clear that the party has the votes to avoid a government shutdown. The Republican stopgap spending plan will keep much of the government funded at 2024 levels, which GOP leaders hope will get fiscal conservatives [财政保守派] to join the rest of their party to vote yes. However, it's unclear the party has the votes to pass the partisan [单一党派提出的] measure [方法] on their own. The GOP has little room for error this week to get the legislation to President Trump's desk ahead of a Friday night government shutdown deadline. The plan will force spending cuts this year for some entities [实体] and put other funding efforts at risk by the end of the year. That's caused alarm among Democrats who say they won't help Republicans pass the measure this time.
The Supreme Court [最高法院] is declining [拒绝] to halt [暂停] climate change lawsuits [案子]. Some states have filed [提告] against the fossil fuel [化石燃料] industry. NPR's Michael Copley reports a group of Republican attorneys general [检察官] had asked the court to intervene [介入]. Lawsuits in various state courts alleged [声称] the fossil fuel industry misled [误导] the public about the dangers its products pose [影响] to the Earth's climate. They're aimed at forcing companies to help pay for damages from more extreme storms, heat waves, and rising sea levels. A group of Republican attorneys general had argued the lawsuits threaten [威胁] other states' sovereignty [主权] and the future of the U.S. energy industry. The American Petroleum [石油] Institute, an industry group, said it's disappointed [失望的] by the Supreme Court decision, but that climate policy is an issue for Congress [国会] to debate, not the courts [法院]. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court turned down requests from oil companies to block a climate lawsuit in Hawaii.
A new ceasefire deal [停火协议] between Israel and Hamas [哈马斯] is likely in a matter of weeks. That's according to President Trump's hostage affairs envoy [人质问题特使]. NPR's Daniel Estrin has more from Tel Aviv. Trump's envoy Adam Bowler held secret direct talks recently with Hamas, which he spoke about on CNN yesterday. The reality is what I wanted to do is jumpstart [快速开始] some negotiations [谈判] that were in a very fragile [脆弱的] place. And I wanted to say to Hamas, what is the end game [最终目标] that you want here? Bowler also told Israeli public broadcasting that Hamas is proposing a 5-10 year truce [停火协议] with Israel, with the U.S. ensuring no Hamas tunnels [地道] or military activity in Gaza, and without Hamas involved in governing Gaza. It's the first time details have emerged about a proposed timetable for Hamas laying down its arms [放下武器]. Hamas has not commented publicly.
The major sell-off [抛售] on Wall Street continuing today with one of the worst trading days of the year. Investors fear President Trump's tariffs could possibly throw the economy into recession [经济衰退]. The Dow fell nearly 900 points. The Nasdaq dropped 4% today.
Doctors in Rome now say Pope [教皇] Francis does not appear in any imminent [随时会发生的] danger of death as a result of pneumonia [肺炎], but they do say they'll likely keep him hospitalized for at least a few more days. Doctors today saying the 88-year-old pontiff [教皇] is in stable condition and has shown improvement. Francis followed the Vatican's [梵蒂冈] week-long spiritual retreat [精神静修] via video conference as he continues to recover from double pneumonia [双肺肺炎] after spending several weeks in the hospital [可见02232025日新闻].
Scientists have developed a system that restores [恢复] a sense of touch as well as movement to people living with paralysis [瘫痪]. NPR's John Hamilton reports on the project at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research on Long Island. The system uses a brain-computer interface [脑机接口] and artificial intelligence to bypass [绕过] the damaged part of a patient's spine [脊椎]. That allows signals from the motor [运动] area of the brain to control the muscles [肌肉] in a person's hand. Keith Thomas, who is paralyzed from the chest down from a diving accident, says it also sends signals to his brain from sensors [传感器] on his hand. They hooked [连接] me up to the machine and, like, the first time I felt my index finger [食指], I was like, whoa. The system also stimulates [刺激] the spinal cord [脊椎] when signals are going in either direction. This strengthens the remaining natural connections between the brain and body, even when a person isn't connected to the computer interface.
Mortgage broker [贷款中介] Rocket Company says it's buying online real estate [房地产] service Redfin in a $1.75 billion deal. With the deal, one of the nation's largest mortgage lenders gets an in-house [此处指内部的] network of more than 2,000 real estate agents [中介] across much of the country, along with Redfin's popular home and rental housing listings.
