The graph below gives information on the performance of a train company in October and November in 2008. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graphs illustrate the percentage of trains that were either delayed or cancelled over a seven-week period for a particular train company in October and November 2008.
Overall, the proportion of trains delayed was much higher compared to those cancelled and showed greater volatility, whereas cancellations, peaking early in the period and again in mid-November, fluctuated much less.
In the first week of October, the percentage of trains running late stood at 20%, a figure that had climbed to 30% by the second week; however, the following two weeks saw a sharp decline, bottoming out at approximately 5% in week 4. A similar trend occurred with cancellations, albeit with far fewer trains being cancelled, with the proportion rising from 1% to a peak of 7% by week 2 before falling steeply to match its 1st week figure.
In contrast, November witnessed a significant rise in delays, soaring to 55% in week 2 before falling to 40% in the final week. Though cancellations also saw an increase, they were far less extreme, increasing to only 5% in week 2 prior to seeing a slight drop of 1% in week 3.
In essence, while cancellations remained relatively contained throughout the period, the performance of trains in terms of punctuality deteriorated markedly in November.
