Humanitarian action and intervention is an important and necessary force in the world today. Sometimes however, these efforts can become very flawed and can even hinder more than help. For this episode, Professor Joost Herman visits the lab to discuss his publication "Building on the capacities of crisis-affected populations: From victims to actors" in the journal ‘Development Policy Review’, research that addresses the challenges inherent in disaster response and humanitarian action. As Joost explains, such efforts must be carefully planned and coordinated, building upon contextual knowledge and research. Joost highlights the crucial role of higher education in building resilient societies across the globe, exploring how processes of globalisation, development and humanitarian action are intertwined.
