In today’s modern China, disabled people have much to teach us about how to face challenges in everyday life. This unique perspective has been explored by Prof. Sarah Dauncey, our first guest from the University of Nottingham UK. Sarah has been visiting and studying China for over 30 years and has pioneered a new field relating to disability in modern Chinese culture. An underexplored area of study, Sarah’s work has focused on the development of new ways of understanding disability in anon-Western context. In this episode, Sarah joins us to discuss her British Academy-funded project entitled 'Disabled but not Useless: Disability and Identity in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture', which focuses on key figures whose lives and works have influenced the way in which disabled people are viewed and view themselves in the post-reform era. The movement towards clean energy is gathering pace, as countries and companies around the globe work towards making our planet safer and livable for all. One big part of such a change is encouraging investment and introducing legislation, yet these policies can vary significantly in different places. While clear energy is a noble endeavor, the complex reality of the many uncoordinated efforts makes this movement very different in terms of impact, and can even end up hindering efforts. For this episode, Dr. Jingong Huang from the School of Economics drops into the Lab to talk about his research into clean energy policies around the world. This week, Beyond the Books is visited by an academic heavyweight! Professor Laura Bishop is a Professor of Paleoanthropology and has a wealth of experience exploring ancient sites around the world. One of these sites is atNyayanga in modern day Kenya, where there is evidence of an early Hominid presence from between 2 and 3 million years ago. Laura cautions that we can never be too sure about life so far back in time and explains how her research is part of putting together a wider puzzle to explain the lives of our distant ancestors. Through better understanding such a past, we can draw new conclusions about our own existence and what it means to be human. Conducting research is difficult, messy and challenging, and this holds even more true if fieldwork is conducted in conflict-affected environments. Data collection happens within a social relationship – and this always affects the data. Assistant Professor in our School of International Studies Dr Kerstin Tomiak joins us to discuss her research in South Sudan. Kerstin is probably the most well-travelled of all our interviewees, and has had an incredibly versatile career, all of which makes her well equipped to design methodology for radically different contexts. Humanitarian action and intervention is an important and necessary force in the world today. Sometimes however, these efforts can become very flawed and can even hinder more than help. For this episode, Professor Joost Herman visits the lab to discuss his publication "Building on the capacities of crisis-affected populations: From victims to actors" in the journal ‘Development Policy Review’, research that addresses the challenges inherent in disaster response and humanitarian action. During the Ming Dynasty, relations with Portuguese traders were an important part of China's international relations and changed radically depending upon the wider global (and local) context. As China's economy has rapidly developed, disparities have emerged between the east coastal, central, and western regions. In the face of such regional imbalances, how does China's fiscal system operate? What policies has the central government implemented to narrow these gaps? Should you really start school early? Studying twins can tell us... Today many parents are concerned about their child’s learning, and want to know how to accelerate this. One common belief is that starting school early can give children an increased head-start in education. However, is this really true? Dr. Xuyan Lou, Assistant Professor in our School of Economics, was determined to find out the answer. Together with her collaborators, Xuyan adopted a novel approach to studying this question: she examined data from twins in China, using this to assess if the common Chinese saying “the early bird will catch the worm” is correct or not. Exploring Transpositioning and Translanguaging in the Classroom Welcome to Episode 10 of ‘Beyond the Books: FHSSResearch Uncovered’. For this episode, we have a special guest: Dr. Kevin Tai from the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong. Kevin is Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy Education and Co-Director of the Centre for Advancement in Inclusive and Special Education. During his time here, he stopped by the Language and Pedagogy Laboratory to talk to us about his new paper “Transpositioning in English medium instruction classroom discourse: insights from a translanguaging perspective”published in the journal ‘Language and education’.
