Before I dive into today’s topic, let me share a quick story.

It was the Chinese New Year of 2013. I flew to the U.S. for my MBA admissions interview. My interviewer was a second-year Michigan Ross MBA student—a tall, good-looking American guy. Toward the end of the interview, right before it was my turn to ask him questions, he suddenly leaned forward and said: “Before I let you ask me questions, I have one last question for you.”

I smiled: “Sure!”

He said: “Where did you pick up your English? I mean… you don’t have an accent at all! Did you go to an international school growing up?”

I answered: “No. Public school all the way till I graduated from high school.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Interesting… some of my foreign friends who grew up in the States don’t speak as well as you do. That’s impressive!”

And I just said with a big smile: “Thank you, sir!” 😊

That was just one example. Ever since college, many of my classmates and friends in the U.S. often told me the same thing—they didn’t realize I wasn’t American until later, because my English didn’t give me away.

So today, I want to share the real story behind this: how I, as a second-language speaker, actually learned English.

It was indeed a surprise to learn that you turned out not to be a native speaker David! Thanks to your sharing, I get to reflect on my English learning journey as well. I guess one of our similarities is like we were both lucky to get immersion to an authentic English environment. I really appreciate your courage and persistence in the US summer camp. Personally, as a primary school student, I met one of the greatest English teachers in my life, who had the routine of listening to BBC every morning in her office, every single day throughout my four years with her. When you talked about the relative advantage of children before 12 to pick up a second language, I instantly thought of her, feeling honored to be her student and more importantly, deep gratitude for picking up the language learning habit from her. Currently I live in Shanghai as an AP and A-level psychology teacher. Like you, I try to create an English bubble for myself, but I constantly get frustrated. I feel like without full language immersion as a student or intentional practice, I gradually losing, or downgrading my English capacity. Especially, I find myself struggling to write productively and express my thoughts authentically. I "force" myself to listen to BBC world news every day, but to be honest, I get more and more politically depressed and wondering about the craziness of the world. In addition, I would watch English drama series or filmes, but only 30 min daily at most. I used to read English novels, but now after a long day of work, all I want to do is lie down and watch bilibili maybe…I feel guilty for my lack if motivation and my degrading English competency, could you give me some advice?🥹🥹

Regarding your question, like I said in the episode, do something you like that involves English. You don’t have to watch/listen to BBC if you don’t like the rhetoric and perspective. Doing things you actually enjoy is the secret to longevity. But I do admit, the only way to improve writing is through reading good books/articles/blogs and mimicking the way they write. So.. read books you enjoy… at the end of the day, English is a tool and a window to the world. Don’t stress yourself out. The fact that you’re listening to this podcast everyday is a great start already!

学英文我最讨厌的就是重复,但是David的一期节目我可以反复听10遍,娓娓道来的叙事节奏非常舒适!真棒👍

After listened this podcast, I am wondering what I really like. It really takes a while until I find what I really like, reading. In Melody’s podcast , I find interest to read book. So today, I start with a book that I already read in Chinese, and the book is called’ baby brain rules’. Thankfully, it is not that hard, yet I still don’t know some words. And I’ll keep sharing my progress.

I’ve also experienced similar situations when native speakers express their appreciation for my accent. But to be honest I think my accent sometimes covers for my listening skills since I don’t always fully understand what they are saying and it would be worse if they use lots of slangs 🥲
DWangDavid
:
It just takes practice and immersion. If foreigners think you have a good accent, that’s half the battle!

Being afraid of making mistakes while speaking English has been always the most challenging thing for me. But now I think language is a tool to communicate, the grammar is correct or not maybe not the most important thing.
DWangDavid
:
Thanks for sharing. That’s a very common challenge among second language speakers. But you simply have to look past your fear and block out the noise and just speak. Don’t worry about grammar and all that. Don’t stress about making mistakes. You improve through practice. Once you gain that confidence, you’re well on your way to becoming a good English speaker!
