President Trump's team began tightening security as shock and anger reverberated through the White House following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, who died Wednesday after being shot by a gunman at an outdoor event in Utah, cultivated close ties to the president, his family, Vice President JD Vance and many of the young aides who work in the administration. Kirk, 31, became one of the most prominent conservative voices of his generation, advocating for Trump's policy agenda and organizing a far-reaching voter turnout operation during the 2024 presidential election.
The killing of Kirk served as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in an era of extreme partisanship and harsh political rhetoric, and it appeared to further divide Washington instead of uniting it. Trump and his team feel under siege from opponents, while Democrats have condemned the blunt language and actions used by Trump and his administration.
Trump, during a video address Wednesday from the Oval Office, blamed the "radical left" for the rise in political violence and promised to take action. "It's time for the Trump administration to shut down, defund, & prosecute every single Leftist organization," conservative activist Laura Loomer wrote on X. "The Left is a national security threat."
White House staff secretary Will Scharf stood mournfully outside the West Wing on Wednesday to watch the flag atop the building be lowered to half-staff. Others absorbed the news from their desks, some with tears in their eyes.
