Let’s begin the story

On a warm summer morning, the fox wandered through the woods, tired and hungry.
在一个温暖的夏日早晨，狐狸在树林里漫步，又累又饿
His belly grumbled. “Time for a break…” he muttered.
他的肚子咕咕叫。“该休息一下啦……”他嘟囔道。
Up ahead, a giant willow draped its branches like green curtains.
前方，一棵巨大的柳树垂下绿色的枝条，像窗帘一样。
“This is a perfect spot for a nap,” the fox thought.
“这正好是个睡觉的好地方。”狐狸心想。
Just as he settled down, something on the trunk caught his eye.
正当他要坐下时，树干上的什么东西引起了他的注意。
Some small words were carved into the bark.
树皮上刻着小小的字。
He leaned closer and read aloud:
他凑近，大声读道：
“Sleep now, sleep now… close your eyes and drift away, beneath the whispering willow tree!”
睡吧，睡吧……闭上眼睛，随风飘入梦里，在那低语的柳树下
POOF! His eyelids drooped, his legs gave way, and he fell fast asleep beneath the willow.
唰——狐狸的眼皮发沉，双腿一软，倒在柳树下睡了过去。
After a while, the fox awoke, rubbing his eyes.
过了好久，狐狸醒来，揉着眼睛。
“I found a spell that makes you sleep!” the fox cried with delight.
“我发现了一个让你睡觉的咒语！”狐狸兴奋地叫道。
“Now I can do something naughty with it…”
“这下我可以用它来做点坏事情了……”
Soon he spotted Mr. Bear carrying a bucket of honey.
不久，他看到熊先生提着一桶蜂蜜。
“Hey, Mr. Bear! I found a magical spell on the willow tree. Want to see it?”
“熊先生！我在柳树上发现了一个神奇的咒语。要不要去看看？”
Mr. Bear followed the fox without hesitation.
憨厚的熊先生毫不犹豫地跟着狐狸过去。
“Read it aloud,” the fox whispered.
“把它念出来。”狐狸低声说。
Mr. Bear read slowly:
熊先生慢慢地念道：
“Sleep now, sleep now… close your eyes and drift away, beneath the whispering willow tree!”
睡吧，睡吧……闭上眼睛，随风飘入梦里，在那低语的柳树下
THUD! Mr. Bear collapsed onto the grass, snoring peacefully.
咚！熊先生倒在草地上，安安静静地睡着了。
The fox giggled and carried the honey back to his den.
狐狸咯咯笑着，把蜂蜜抱回自己的洞里。
Goat, Squirrel, Parrot, and others came next.
接着是山羊、松鼠、鹦鹉，还有其他动物。
Each read the rhyme, each fell asleep—
每只动物念完咒语，就立刻睡着了——
and the fox gathered berries, nuts, seeds, and fruit until his den overflowed.
狐狸收集了浆果、坚果、种子、水果，直到洞里堆得满满当当。
One sunny afternoon, the fox spotted Mole slowly shuffling along with a tiny basket of mushrooms.
阳光明媚的下午，狐狸看见鼹鼠慢吞吞地提着一小篮蘑菇走来。
“Hello, Mole!” the fox called with a sly grin.
“鼹鼠，你好啊！”狐狸狡猾地笑着喊道。
“I found a magical spell. Want to see it?”
“我发现了一个神奇的咒语。要不要去看看？”
Mole blinked his tiny eyes. “I… I can try… but my eyesight is terrible.”
鼹鼠眨了眨小小的眼睛。“我……我可以试试……可是我的眼神真的不太好啊”
The fox pointed at the carved letters.
狐狸指着树干上的字。
Mole leaned in very close—
so close his nose almost touched the bark.
鼹鼠凑得非常近——
近到鼻子几乎贴在树皮上。
He squinted… tilted left… tilted right…
他眯着眼……左歪歪……右歪歪……
“Hmm… It says… ‘Sleep… sheep? potato toes?’”
“呃……好像写着……‘睡觉 土豆 脚趾头？’”
“No!” the fox said. “Try again!”
“错啦！”狐狸说。“再试一次！”
“I-I’m sorry… the letters are too blurry…”
“对、对不起……这些字太模糊了……”
The fox’s tail twitched with frustration.
狐狸气得尾巴直抖。
“That’s enough! I’ll read it to you!”
“够了！我来帮你念！”
He took a deep breath and read aloud:
他深吸一口气，念道：
“Sleep now, sleep now… close your eyes and drift away, beneath the whispering willow tree!”
睡吧，睡吧……闭上眼睛，随风飘入梦里，在那低语的柳树下
POOF! His eyes drooped, his legs wobbled, and he fell fast asleep.
唰——狐狸眼皮一沉，双腿一软，一下子就睡着了。
Mole gasped. “Fox? Fox?”
鼹鼠吓了一跳。“狐狸？狐狸？”
Then he suddenly remembered all the animals had been complaining—
their berries, nuts, honey all mysteriously disappearing.
接着他猛地想起——
最近大家总在抱怨浆果、坚果、蜂蜜都神秘不见了。
Now Mole knew why.
现在鼹鼠终于明白原因了。
He hurried off to call the other animals.
他连忙去把其他动物都叫来。
Together, they retrieved all the stolen food.
大家一起把狐狸偷走的食物全都取了回来。
When the fox finally awoke, his den was completely empty.
等狐狸醒来，洞里已经空空如也。
From that day on, the fox never tricked anyone again.
从那天起，狐狸再也没有捉弄过任何动物了。
