Mandy: [Sounds confused] Patrick, I have a quick question. I saw an email from our director today. It said, "I need to sign off on this budget." Does that mean he is quitting his job?
上面说,“I need to sign off on this budget.”
Patrick: That is a funny misunderstanding! But I understand why you are confused. Welcome to "Beyond English." Today we are talking about a phrase with two very different meanings: Sign off.
Mandy: So, he is not leaving the company?
Mandy:
Patrick: No. In business, "to sign off on something" means to give official approval.
Patrick: 不是。在商业中,"to sign off on something" 的意思是给予正式批准。
Mandy: Ah, approval. Like saying "yes"?
Mandy:
Patrick: Yes. Imagine a paper document. To approve it, the boss must write his signature at the bottom. He is "signing off" to say it is okay.
Mandy: That makes sense. So he needs to approve the money. But Patrick, I also use "sign off" when I finish work. Is that wrong?
Patrick: That is also correct! That is the second meaning: to stop working or go offline.
Mandy: Why do we use the same word?
Mandy:
Patrick: Think about the old days. To leave a secure building, you had to write your name and time in a logbook at the door. You literally "signed off" to show you were leaving.
Mandy: I love that image! Signing the book to go home. So, how do I use this when I work from home?
Patrick: It is perfect for remote work. At 6 PM, you can type in the group chat: "I'm signing off for the day. See you tomorrow."
Mandy: That sounds professional. It is better than saying "I am leaving," because I am already at home!
Patrick: Exactly. So, Patrick, what is the difference between "Sign off" and "Log out"?
Patrick: 没错。那么,Patrick,"Sign off" 和 "Log out" 有什么区别?
Mandy: Wait, I am Mandy. You are asking yourself?
Patrick: Sorry! I meant to explain the difference. "Log out" is technical. You click a button. "Sign off" is social. You tell people you are finishing.
Mandy: Social vs. Technical. Got it. Listeners, are you ready to sign off?
Patrick: Or do you need someone to sign off on your project first?
Patrick:
Mandy: Tell us in the comments: What time do you usually sign off?
Mandy:
Patrick: Thanks for listening. We are signing off now!
Patrick:
