The Giraffe’s Long Neck | 长颈鹿的长脖子
Once upon a time, giraffes didn’t have the long necks we see today.
很久以前，长颈鹿还没有今天这样长的脖子。
He ate grass and nibbled the low leaves, spending quiet days with zebras, antelope, and deer.
他吃青草，啃着低处的树叶，和斑马、羚羊、鹿一起，过着平静的日子。
Then one year, the rain didn’t come for a long time.
可是有一年，很久都没有下雨。
The sun shone hot in the sky, and the ground cracked under its heat.
太阳火辣辣地照着大地，土地被晒得干裂。
The grass dried up, and the low leaves were all eaten.
青草枯萎了，低处的树叶也被吃光了。
The giraffe’s stomach rumbled with hunger.
长颈鹿的肚子咕咕叫了起来。
He lifted his head and saw fresh, green leaves glowing high in an acacia tree above him.
他抬起头，看见金合欢树上，高高挂着翠绿的新叶。
“If only I could reach those,” he thought.
“要是我能够到那些叶子就好了，”他心里想。
He stood on his toes and stretched as far as he could,
他踮起脚尖，拼命向上伸展，
but the leaves stayed just out of reach.
可是叶子还是差一点点。
A monkey swinging above laughed loudly.
树上的猴子荡来荡去，大声笑了起来。
“Hey, big fellow! What are you doing? Trying to turn into a tree?”
“嘿，大个子！你在干什么？想变成一棵树吗？”
The giraffe said nothing.
长颈鹿没有回答。
He just kept reaching.
他只是继续向上够。
The next day, he stood taller than before.
第二天，他站得比昨天更直了。
His legs shook and his muscles ached,
他的腿开始发抖，肌肉也酸痛起来，
but the leaves were still too high.
可叶子依然太高。
A zebra trotted by and looked up.
一只斑马小跑着经过，抬头看了看。
“Those leaves are far beyond us,” the zebra said.
“那些叶子，我们是够不到的。”斑马说。
The giraffe did not turn around.
长颈鹿没有回头。
He only looked up.
他只是继续仰望。
By the third day, his neck ached with every stretch.
到了第三天，他每一次伸长脖子，都会感到酸痛。
A hyena crept past, cackling.
一只鬣狗悄悄走过，发出刺耳的笑声。
“You’re wasting your time! You’ll never reach them!”
“你是在浪费力气！永远也够不到的！”
Still, the giraffe kept stretching.
可长颈鹿还是没有停下。
Then, on Sunday afternoon, he closed his eyes, pressed his hooves into the ground, and stretched as far as he possibly could.
终于，在一个星期天下午，他闭上眼睛，把蹄子牢牢踩进土地里，用尽全身的力气向上伸展。
He stretched farther than ever before — farther than he thought possible.
他的脖子伸得比以往任何时候都更长——连他自己都没想到。
Suddenly—
突然——
His teeth touched a leaf.
他的牙齿碰到了叶子。
The leaf tasted cool and sweet.
那片叶子清凉又甘甜。
From that day on, he kept stretching. Little by little, his neck grew longer.
从那天起，他每天都继续向上伸展，一点一点，脖子变长了。
He became the tallest animal on the grassland, with his feet on the golden earth and his head brushing the sky.
他成了草原上最高的动物，脚踩金色的大地，头仿佛碰到了天空。
And that, my friends, is how the giraffe got his long neck.
