Patrick: Being put on the spot is terrifying. So, what did you do? Did you hide under the table?

Mandy: I wanted to! But I stood up, took the microphone, and just started talking. I didn't have a plan, I just figured it out as I spoke.

Patrick: You were brave. There is a perfect idiom for what you did. You had to: Wing it.

Mandy: Wing it. Does it have anything to do with birds?
Mandy: Wing it。这跟鸟有关系吗？
Patrick: Surprisingly, no. It actually comes from the theater.

Mandy: The theater? How so?

Patrick: Imagine an actor who doesn't know his lines. He stands at the side of the stage, in the area called the "wings," trying to quickly memorize the script before he walks out.

Mandy: I see. So he is studying in the wings, and then he goes out and tries his best.

Patrick: Exactly. So to "wing it" means to do something with little or no preparation. You trust your instincts.

Mandy: That is a great backstory. Are there other ways to say this?

Patrick: Yes. A more formal word is: Improvise. Musicians improvise jazz; you improvised a speech.

Mandy: Improvise. That sounds artistic. Is there a casual one?

Mandy: Making it up as I go. That feels very accurate. So, Patrick, can I use "wing it" at work?

Patrick: You can use it to describe a situation, but be careful. You don't want your boss to think you are lazy.
