Live from NPR in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Hundreds of active-duty [现役的] troops who were told to be ready for deployment [部署] to Minnesota have been told to stand down. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports ICE operations in that state may be scaling back [降低规模]. A U.S. official has confirmed to NPR that more than 1,500 troops based in Alaska, Colorado, and North Carolina have been taken off alert [解除警戒] by U.S. Northern Command. They had been on standby for possible deployment to Minnesota, where protesters have been demonstrating against the Trump administration's aggressive immigration enforcement tactics [战术,手段]. Last month, President Trump threatened repeatedly to invoke [援引] the Insurrection Act [叛乱法案] and send active-duty soldiers to Minneapolis over [不顾] the wishes of state and local government. But after bystander [围观者] videos showed two cases where ICE agents shot dead U.S. citizens, the public outcry [强烈抗议] seems to have prompted a shift. White House border czar [边境沙皇] Tom Homan says about 700 of the 3,000 federal agents in Minnesota are leaving.

A federal judge in Florida has sentenced the man who tried to assassinate [刺杀] Donald Trump on a golf course [高尔夫球场] when he was running for president in 2024. NPR's Greg Allen reports Ryan Ruth will spend the rest of his life in prison. U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon previously found Ruth guilty [有罪的] on five counts for his planned attempt on Trump's life when the then-presidential candidate [候选人] was golfing at his club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent saw Ruth holding a rifle [步枪] in the tree line a hole ahead of where Trump was golfing. The agent accosted [搭讪] and then fired on Ruth, who fled in his car and was arrested a short time later. At a sentencing hearing, Ruth addressed the court seeking leniency [仁慈(减刑)]. But Judge Cannon was unmoved. Your plot [密谋] to kill was deliberate [故意的] and evil [邪恶的], she said. You are not a peaceful man. Ruth's attorney [律师] says he will appeal the life sentence.

The Supreme Court is allowing California to move forward with its new congressional map [选区地图]. Republicans had asked the court to block it, calling the map a racial gerrymander [根据种族改地图]. But in a brief order today, the justices declined to intervene [介入]. California Democrats redrew the map to offset [抵消] the GOP-friendly redistricting that President Trump pushed for and got in Texas.

The Winter Olympics opening ceremony isn't until Friday, but as NPR's Becky Sullivan reports, events officially got underway today in Milan. The first four mixed doubles curling [冰壶] matches are today, and the men's alpine [高山滑雪] skiers had their first training run, including the U.S. downhill skier Ryan Cochran-Siegel, who recorded the day's fastest time. In women's hockey [冰球], group stage games begin tomorrow, too. The U.S. team is captained by Hillary Knight, and they will take on Czechia [捷克] in Milan. It's a far-flung [(涉及地区)深远] Olympic Games. The only events in Milan are speed skating, figure skating, and hockey. Everything else, from curling to ski jumping to snowboard cross to biathlon [铁人两项], is being held in resort [度假区] towns stretching across the Dolomites [意大利北部的多洛米蒂山脉] in northern Italy. At last check on Wall Street, the doubt was up 222 points.

The Washington Post [华盛顿邮报] announced today that it's cutting jobs across its newsroom. The paper is shutting down its sports desk, book section, suspending its signature podcast, post reports, and shrinking its international team. Leaders are calling the move a strategic reset.

A baseball pioneer has died. Ron Teasley was among the first wave of African-American players signed to the major leagues after Jackie Robinson broke the racial barrier [种族隔离] and was also a standout in the Negro [黑人的,现在多为极强的贬义] National Leagues. He was 99. NPR's Debbie Elliott has this remembrance. Ron's schoolboy Teasley signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. He got the tryout after excelling [脱颖而出] at Detroit's Northwestern High School and in college at Wayne State University, where he still holds a batting record [击球纪录]. He played for a Dodgers minor league team, but was cut a few months later and joined the New York Cubans of the Negro Leagues. That was unusual, says his son, Ronald A. Teasley. That means that my dad actually played in the minor leagues, MLB minor leagues, before playing in the Negro League. I don't think anybody other player did that. After his playing career, Teasley was a longtime coach at his high school alma mater [高中母校] and worked to return baseball to the inner city.

McDonald's is bringing a touch of luxury [豪华] to Valentine's Day [情人节]. The fast food chain is releasing a limited edition McNugget [麦乐鸡块] caviar [鱼子酱] kit. It includes a one-ounce tin of Siberian [西伯利亚] sturgeon [鲟鱼] caviar and a $25 gift card to buy McNuggets.
