OK, so there are two more questions in part three. First one is, do men and women like to watch exactly the same types of movies?
Well, not necessarily. People often assume men prefer action, while women go for romance or drama. But that's not always true. For example, I'm a girl, and I personally love action movies. So, in the end, it really comes down to individual preference rather than gender.
Any other topics?
Yeah, the second question is, in your opinion, will the trend of action movies continue in the future?
What do you think?
Absolutely. Action movies have universal appeal, especially with evolving stunt techniques and visual effects. As long as they keep innovating, I think the genre will stay popular for a long time.
Cool, thanks for listening,谢谢大家收听。
Good day mate. Have nice days. Bye.

The reason I love to share this movie with my friends is because it's so much more than just an action movie. The fight scenes are like a perfectly timed dance. Jackie uses everyday objects like chairs and umbrellas in the most creative ways. He shoots everything in wide angles with long takes, so you see the entire move and the reaction in one shot. There is no shaky cam or over editing. What you are seeing is real skill and precision.
Next one is long takes,表示长镜头。
Another reason I love this movie is the raw authenticity. The characters don't just fight and walk away unharmed. If they get hit, they react. They limp, they groan, they rub their back. It adds humor but also a layer of realism that's missing from many modern blockbusters.
So, overall, “Police Story” is not just entertaining, it's inspiring, it's the kind of movie that makes you appreciate the sheer effort and creativity behind filmmaking, and that's exactly why I'd want my friends to watch it with me.Ideally, so we can all marvel at it together.

So Wing, after talking so much about the action movie, do you have any tips for our speaking test?
Of course in IELTS there's a topic in speaking part two. It's about movies, so the topic is describe a film or movie you would like to share with your friends. What is the movie? Where did you watch it? Who did you watch it with? And why do you want to share it with your friends?
Can you give us an example?
Of course.
One film I'd absolutely love to share with my friends is “Police Story”, a classic Hong Kong action movie, starring Jackie Chan, it's hands down one of the most iconic action movie ever made and in my opinion, it showcases everything that makes Jackie Chan a legend. Not just as an actor, but as a stuntman and choreographer.
I first watched it a few years ago at home, on a streaming platform. I remember being completely hooked from the opening scene. I was alone that time, but I kept thinking “Man, I wish someone else was watching this with me right now”, especially the scene where he slides down a pole wrapped in exploding light bulbs. I actually had to rewind and watch it again. It was that intense.
Next one is rewind,它表示回放。

哇,that's true
哦,yeah,that's true。
OK, what's next?
Let's talk about explosions, classic movie scenes. In reality, gasoline is actually pretty stable. A bullet alone usually won't set it off. Same with C-4. You need a proper detonator. Shooting it or setting it on fire won't do the trick.
OK, and how about pulling grenade pins with your teeth? That's peak martial energy.
Yeah, and peak dental disaster. Grenade pins are designed to stay in tight. Otherwise, it will be easily exploded all the time when you, you know, store it or transport it. So pulling them with your teeth could seriously mess up your jaw, or not even work at all.
Yeah, I guess when the dentist see this scene probably they are having a headache.
Yeah I bet,
Yeah. And the final myth, the hero walking away from a giant explosion, all cool and calm, without even flinching.
Don't get me wrong, I love those scenes. But in reality if you are that close the blast wave alone could knock you out plus the heat the debris flying shrapnel. Walking away in slow motion is basically asking to be roasted or shredded

Not unless they are screaming at the top of their lungs. Not to mention if that person is dying. They cannot scream out. So, they can't really hear each other. That's actually why in real life combats or tactical situations people rely on hand gestures. You have to because your ears are basically useless once the shooting starts,
True。
Yeah. So, just for your information, if you go clubbing, and sometimes the decibels can reach up to 90 to 100. So, you can imagine like how 140 decibels feel like.
Yep, totally. And the next one is dual-welding pistols. It looks awesome, looks cool, but totally impractical. You lose all your control and accuracy trying to fire two guns at once. You just cannot do that. It's not that easy to aim at anything
And how about shooting locks open? That feels like something every action hero has done at least once.
Yup, that's totally just movie magic. Can it work? Maybe if you hit it perfectly, and if it's an old weak lock. But most modern locks are pretty tough, and bullets can ricochet. It's more likely to get you hurt than get you in.

Well said, well said. Well, you know, Wing, actually back in the days when I was still a child.
I was so foolish. I thought everything was real. Then I felt so sorry for the actors. I was like, oh my gosh! Wow! Are they gonna die?
You are very compassionate. That's a good thing.
Yeah yeah, that's true.
But a lot, you know, there are movies, a lot of things are staged, and now let's actually take a minute to debunk some of the most popular action movie myths. Time to break a few hearts.
Oh, what's that? I can't wait.
OK, so the first one, silencers. You know that soft biu biu sounds, they always make in the movie with a gun. Yeah, you know you put a silence in front of a gun, and it's magically the gunshot sounds completely gone.
Yeah it's like they are using toy guns or something.
Well in real life even the best suppressors only cut down about 20 to 35 decibels,就是再好再好的消音器,它其实也最最最多能降低个20-35分贝。
OK, so actually that's fake. Yep, I remember when I played PUBG. And the sound of the gunshot was so loud. However, if I installed a silencer, and the sound can decrease a bit, but still have that kind of sound, not like the biu biu. Just like that.
It's definitely not biu biu. The biu biu thing only existed in the emojis or the GIF on WeChat.
True. So you are not sneaking through a building unnoticed with that thing.
Nope. If you are in the next room, you are going to hear that loud and clear.
Oh, all right. What about the classic scene? Like the characters casually chatting mid gunfight.
That's another thing I want to debunk. Gunfire is crazy loud, as I mentioned. It's about 140 decibels and up. That's enough to cause instant hearing damage. No one's having a chill conversation without serious hearing protection. So, it's impossible.
Well, so the whole “cover me”, and dramatic last words in the middle chaos not happening.

Exactly. He treats fight scenes like a dance choreography. There's pacing, flow, a build up, even beats that match the sound effects or music. You are not just watching people hit each other, you are watching a performance.
Yeah, and the pain too.
Yeah, totally. You get it. That's intentional too. Jackie believes pain is what makes a character human. If they get hits, they react. So you can see in Jackie's movie, he would limp, sometimes rub his back or like shake his hands after hitting something hard or hitting a person because it hurts when you hit someone. It adds comedy but also makes the character more relatable.
Yeah even though it's a bit exaggerating.
That's true, and something is very interesting, he can turn anything into a weapon. Like in a fighting scene, he can just grab anything and then just hit someone.
Yeah, he's the king of using random stuff, like chairs, brooms, Mugs, beer bottles, and fire extinguisher etc.. But here is the fun parts, and I learned recently, of course, but I actually see that with my bare eyes. Those props are rigged, like the bottles, he smashes made of sugar glass, so as some ashtray, and chairs. They are pre-cracked so they break safely. They look solid but they are designed to fall apart easily without injuring the actors.
Oh man That's genius.
Yeah, so, every move is so thought out, but it still looks totally natural.
Yeah, that's the magic of Jackie Chan. He makes mission impossible possible.

Yeah, of course.
So how about the way Jackie Chan's scenes are shot? They feel really different from Hollywood action movies.
Yeah, that's on purpose.
Jackie Chan always shoots actions in wide angles with long takes and barely any cuts. He wants the audience to actually see the action, no quick cuts or shaky camera. You see the move and the reaction in one shot, it makes it feel more real. And honestly, more satisfying.
Just imagine you are in a real fighting, not a movie set. You don't have cuts, right? You cannot tell the fighting people, hey, hey, hey, stop. Let me move to another angle, so you can keep fighting. You cannot do that, and that's why Jackie Chan want this authenticity of movie, of the action. So he prefer to film in long takes, but that need a lot of acting, a lot of rehearsals, and and a lot of arrangement to make that happen.
Yeah, of course. Just like those in “Mission Impossible”. Why is so fascinating is that Tom Cruise use a lot of long takes too. So, for example, when he jumps off the cliff, we can just follow the scenes, and it feels like we are jumping off the cliff too. That's very immersive.
Yeah. You can say a a camera trick, but also those actors work really hard to make that happen. Yeah you you cannot have a double to do that because the audience can see their face. So they always act real like they real doing the acts themselves.
True.
That's why they are really respectful.
I agree.
Exactly.
So, I guess that explains why his fight scenes feel like a dance. There's a rhythm to it.

Those fight scenes in those movies like Jackie Chan movies, they are not just camera tricks.
Jackie Chan is a total master at this. One of the biggest thing he does is knowing exactly where the camera is. He positions himself so precisely that when he throws a punch, it looks like it lands. But in reality, his fist stops just short of the actor's face.
Oh, really? That sounds insane.
Yep
I thought he really punch someone.
How come?
Yeah, that's true. How silly I am.
That means he is acting is really good.
Yeah, no doubt. So he's acting, fighting and directing all at once.
Pretty much, it takes years of training.
Think about it. It's easy to just throw a punch with full power, but to pull all that energy in and stop just inches away without hurting anyone, That's control, man. That's real control on another level. The other actor can literally feel the wind of his punches but they don't really get the hit.
Crazy
Yeah, those are real actors. Your natural reflex is to flinch or blink when something's come at your face. It is totally normal, but in a Jackie Chan movie, you can't, because that would ruin the take. A good actor will know what to do, what to act, always stay in a character, even when a fist is flying straight at you.
Yeah, so, it's very hard for everyone to control their natural reflects.
Yeah, so that's what I also learn on those two movie sets I was in. I saw how they fight and how they rehearse before the real filming and I see how they stop their fist how they stop their feet. It's crazy amazing.

Totally, a lot of people actually came to China just to learn kung fu because of those movies. They watched Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan growing up, and thought, I need to learn that. Those movies didn't just entertain, they inspired a whole wave of martial arts passion around the world. I actually know a friend like that. He was so obsessed. He not only came to China to learn kung fu, he even started learning Cantonese just to understand the original dialect.
Wow that's crazy. He's a big fan. Yep totally.
Yes no cap.
Yup.
Very iconic scene.
When you talk about Asian festival, of course of course you will see a group of non-Chinese faces are playing kung fu on the stage. Of course.
Yeah, that's the symbol of the traditional Chinese culture.
Yup.
And you know, I remember when I was abroad, one of my friend asked me. Yao, do you know Wing Chun? I was like, sorry, I don't know of anything about that. And then he started to show me something like 痴手.
Oh
you know yeah yeah some kind of moves. I was like wow Impressive
Wow, that's dedication, I really love that. It shows how deep the influence goes. It's not just about the fighting, it's about the culture, right? The language, the whole vibe of those classic films. So, Wing, from your point of view, how do those movies make?

Yeah exactly
Yeah, actually that happened to me, you know, when I was abroad, and I tried to introduce myself. “Hello, I'm Yao, and I come from Foshan.” But some people never heard about Foshan, but I told them. So, do you know Bruce Lee, Yip Man? So Foshan is the hometown of the kung fu. They said oh wow, so do you know kung fu? I said I'm sorry I don't.
Yup
Yeah, maybe yes. So, Wing, since last year, you highly recommended the “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” this movie. I know you are definitely a hardcore fan.
Yeah, I love that movie, and also because the set is kind of from 90s, sort of. That movie gives a 90s feelings. And back then kung fu wasn't all CGI or flashy edits. It was raw real choreography, no special effects, just pure skill and timing
Yeah, that's so fake. And those movies really put kung fu on a global map.

Hello everyone It's gossip English time,尬聊英语时间又到了。This is Yao and I'm Wing. Let's learn English through gossip.
Hey, Wing. Have you watched the movie called “Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two”?
Not yet. Is it Tom Cruise's movie?
Yes.
Is in the cinema right now, and I heard it's fascinating.
Cool, it's very famous serial.
Yeah, actually I watch a few “Mission Impossible” movies before. And it was really great. And I heard you were on another action movie set. So, you are really diving into this action scene, huh?
Yeah, I was on two short films. Not huge production, but super fun. On set, we were joking. It's very likely I've pretty much met all the non-Chinese action actors around our great bay area.
It's like a whole little action hero community. Both films are supposed to drop by the end of June. So stay tuned.
Wow That's amazing.
Wow that's cool. Well actually it reminds me of a movie we talked about last year in our podcast, it's called “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”,就是那个九龙城寨之围城。And it was one of my favorite action movies.
Yeah, I love it too.
Of course, like the action was so real, and of course the characters are so cute.
The casting is pretty good.
Yeah
And I love that movie. I like the set a lot, and it was made in Hong Kong.
Yeah!
Hong Kong action movies are iconic.
Yeah, back in the golden time.
Yup. I mean even the word Kongfu in English actually comes from Cantonese Gongfu, especially after Bruce Lee exploded onto the scene. I remember hearing this story back in the day, when not many Chinese were traveling abroad yet. People would see a Chinese person and immediately go wha. You know Bruce Lee's signature shout. (soundbite of Bruce Lee’s action movie scene)
