Live from NPR in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. The U.S. has given Ukraine and Russia a June deadline to reach agreement to end the nearly four-year war. That's according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports. President Volodymyr Zelensky says the U.S. plans to pressure both sides to meet the timeline to end the near four-year war in less than four months. He also said the U.S. and Russia are preparing to sign an economic deal worth 12 trillion [万亿] dollars after Russia presented the U.S. with a lucrative [富裕的,此处指能带来很多收益的] proposal. Zelensky says the plan was uncovered [被发现] by Ukrainian intelligence [情报]. He says Ukraine is ready to make concessions [让步] to end the war, but it must be on acceptable terms [条款]. Ukrainians say Russia has never wavered [退缩] from its maximalist demands [诉求最大化], yet Trump treats both the victim [受害人] and aggressor [进攻方] as equally responsible.
A federal judge told the Trump administration it can't withhold [截流] billions of federal dollars for the New York-New Jersey Gateway Tunnel [隧道] Project while a legal challenge plays out. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, there's a bizarre [奇怪的] naming rights dispute now wrapped up in that freeze. The White House put a hold [暂停] on the project's funding in October. Then this past week, several news outlets reported the White House had told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York that the president would release the funds if Schumer helped rename New York City's main train station and an airport near Washington, D.C. after Trump [name … after … 以...命名]. Asked about it on Air Force One, Trump didn't entirely dismiss [驳回] the idea. Chuck Schumer suggested that to me about changing the name of Penn Station to Trump Station. In a post on X, Schumer disputed [否认] Trump's account saying, quote, absolute lie. He knows it. Everyone knows it. Tamara Keith, traveling with the president.
A federal judge in Minneapolis is giving the Department of Homeland Security until Thursday to craft a plan to ensure that immigration detainees [被羁押者] have access to attorneys [律师]. Matt Seppich of Minnesota Public Radio reports the judge heard arguments yesterday in a lawsuit [官司] from a human rights group. A Honduran [洪都拉斯] asylum [庇护] seeker alleges [声称] she was detained without access to a lawyer after ICE agents arrested her. Attorney Jeffrey Dubner says his client has since been freed, but ICE continues to violate the rights of many others. All that we're seeking is what the Eighth Circuit [第八巡回法庭] has long said is required for people in detention [羁押], which is a reasonable opportunity to seek and receive the assistance of attorneys. A DHS lawyer said detainees get unlimited attorney phone calls, but she did not provide evidence. Judge Nancy Brazel ordered lawyers from both sides to visit the Minneapolis detention center to assess conditions there. She promised to rule Thursday if the parties don't reach a deal.
At the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, the host country has claimed its first gold medal. As NPR's Ping Huang reports, it was a decisive [压倒性的] victory in speed skating. On her birthday, in her home country, Italian speed skater Francesca Lolo Brigida powered through seven and a half laps on the long track course to set a new Olympic record for the 3,000 meter speed skate. She clocked in at 3 minutes and 54 seconds, a full two seconds ahead of the athlete in second place. She told reporters this was the best day ever, a perfect day. For Lolo Brigida, who just turned 35, this is her fourth and last Olympics and her first gold medal. It's also the first gold medal for Italy in these games. After winning the race, Lolo Brigida scooped up [一把抱起来] her two-year-old son. After the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, she said she weighed [权衡] becoming a mother against participating in the next Olympics in Italy, and she didn't want to give up on either of them. Ping Huang, Milan.
President Trump is endorsing [支持] Nexstar Media Group's proposed $6.2 billion purchase of broadcast rival [对手] Tegna months after criticizing the deal. On social media, Trump now says the deal is a good one and that it will knock out what he calls fake news. Nexstar owns or partners with more than 200 stations around the country, and if the deal goes through, it would add Tegna's 64 stations to the mix. The companies operate independently of large broadcast networks such as ABC and NBC. In September, Nexstar suspended [中断] Jimmy Kimmel, his late-night talk show.
