Today we’re talking about a skill that sounds small… but honestly can shape your social life, your career, and even how quickly you feel at home in a new country.
We’re talking about small talk.
I used to think small talk was pointless. Like… why are we talking about the weather? We both have eyes. We can see it’s sunny.
But after living in the U.S., and now in Australia, I’ve realized something important.
Small talk isn’t about information.
Small talk is about connection.
It’s the way humans gently signal to each other:
“I’m friendly. I’m safe. I’m open to interacting.”
And once you see it that way, small talk suddenly feels less fake… and more like a social superpower.
So today, let’s really unpack it — what it is, why Westerners are so good at it, why many of us from East Asian cultures feel awkward, why we’re all getting worse at it in the social media age, and how small talk can actually lead to deep relationships.
