If you're reading this, I'm gone. The house at the end of the street isn't what it seems. In the attic, behind the loose board on the north wall, you'll find something that belongs to you. Come alone. Trust no one.

Maya's hands trembled. E.H. stood for Eleanor Henderson—her great-aunt, the reclusive owner of the mysterious house, who had died three weeks ago. Maya had never met her, but according to family whispers, Eleanor had been "eccentric." Or crazy, depending on who was telling the story.
The next morning, Maya stood at the iron gate, her heart pounding. The gate creaked open at her touch, as if expecting her. Weeds choked the front yard, and paint peeled from the walls like old sunburn. She pushed open the front door—unlocked—and stepped into a world frozen in time.
Dust covered every surface. Old photographs in silver frames watched her from dusty tables. A grandfather clock stood silent at the bottom of the stairs, its hands stopped at 4:17. Maya climbed the creaking steps, her flashlight cutting through the dimness, until she reached the attic door.
