Live from NPR, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Former President Bill Clinton's testifying [作证] before members of the U.S. House Committee investigating cases related to Jeffrey Epstein's crimes and charges [指控] related to the abuse of women and children before the financier's 2019 death in jail. Clinton says that in his associations [关联事件], he saw nothing and did nothing wrong. The proceedings [此处指听证会] are closed [闭门的]. At one point, Committee Chair James Comer emerged from the hearing to highlight Clinton's responses, including this. Should President Trump be called to answer questions for this committee? And President Clinton said, that's for you to decide. And the president went on to say that the president, Trump, has never said anything to me to make me think he was involved, and he met with Epstein. Ranking member [排名第一的委员] Robert Garcia also addressed reporters today. Donald Trump, as we know, needs to come before this committee. He's been caught in multiple lies as it relates to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Both Clinton and Trump say they had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes. Earlier today, Trump said he liked Bill Clinton and did not like to see him deposed [被要求作证].
OpenAI is wading [涉足] into the fight between its rival [竞争对手] Anthropic and the Pentagon [五角大楼] over military use of artificial intelligence. NPR's Shannon Bond reports the Trump administration has given Anthropic a deadline this afternoon to drop restrictions [限制] on how its AI model can be used on classified [机密的] systems. Anthropic says the U.S. military cannot use its AI model for domestic surveillance [国内监控] or to power autonomous weapons [自动化武器]. The Pentagon says companies must allow all lawful uses of their technology. If Anthropic doesn't drop its restrictions, it could lose its $200 million contract [合同] and potentially be blacklisted [上黑名单] from other government work. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says his company also has, quote, red lines about how the military uses its AI. In a note to staff, Altman said OpenAI is trying to negotiate the same guardrails [监管体系] Anthropic is fighting with the Pentagon over, according to a person not authorized to speak public. The Pentagon didn't return a request for comment.
Stocks tumbled [下跌] today after a hotter-than-expected report on wholesale inflation [批发通胀率]. Here's NPR's Scott Horsley. Wholesale prices jumped by half a percent last month, a bigger increase than investors had expected. Stubborn [坚挺的] inflation means the Federal Reserve [美联储] is likely to take its time before ordering any additional cuts in interest rates. Shares [股价] of the fintech company Block bucked [抵挡住] the downward trend in the market and launched big gains after the company announced plans to lay off [裁员] about 40 percent of its workforce. CEO Jack Dorsey says the company, formerly known as Square, will use artificial intelligence to make up for the thousands of laid-off workers. The AI boom [热潮] is generating both excitement and anxiety [焦虑]. OpenAI says it's attracted more than $100 billion worth of investment from Amazon and other tech giants. Scott Horsley, Washington.
A group of congressional Democrats says the U.S. military used a laser [激光] to shoot down a Customs and Border Protection [海关及边境保护局] drone. The FAA [美国联邦航空局] closed an area around Fort Hancock, about 50 miles from El Paso [美墨边境的一个城市]. No commercial flights [商业航班] were affected.
Some popular cereals [麦片] will no longer be available at Target when summer hits. The retail giant says it has been phasing out [逐步取消] cereals containing synthetic [合成的] colors for a few years. Today, it announced they'll be gone from its shelves [货架] by the end of May.
Pokemon [宠物小精灵] is celebrating its 30th anniversary [周年] today. The franchise [系列] started as a pair of games in Japan and has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon [世界级现象]. NPR's Andrew Limbung has more. 30 years ago, the games Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green dropped in Japan for the Nintendo [任天堂] GameBoy [掌上游戏机]. In case you've been living inside a Pokeball for the past 30 years, you walk around catching monsters and use them to fight other trainers with monsters in their pocket. Since then, there have been more video games, TV shows, movies, a trading card game [集换式卡牌游戏], PokemonGo for mobile. The Pokemon company regularly rakes [获得] in billions of dollars in revenue [收入] each year. The company announced a slew [一连串] of new games and merch [merchandize,商品] in celebration of the anniversary and announced the Pokemon World Championships will be taking place in San Francisco this year.
U.S. stocks have ended the day lower. The Dow closed down 521 points or more than 1% to end at 48,977. The S&P closed down 29 points and Nasdaq was down 210 points.
