Let me start today with a very simple question.
What was the first English word you ever memorized?
If you grew up in China, or honestly in a lot of Asian education systems, there’s a very high chance your answer is…
abandon.
You open your vocabulary book, first page, first word…
abandon.
And you tell yourself, “Okay, this time I’m serious. I’m going to learn English properly.”
And then… maybe three days later…
you abandon the entire book.
I’ve done that. More than once.
And what’s funny is that almost everyone I know has had the exact same experience.
There’s even a joke that goes:
“Abandon is the first word I learned… and also the reason I stopped learning English.”
But here’s the interesting thing.
Most people recognize this word.
But very few people actually know how to use it naturally.
So today, I want to slow this down and really unpack it.
Not just what it means, but how it feels, when you use it, when you don’t use it, and how it’s actually used in real life.
