I think I'm a wolf, too, because I remember my most efficient working hours is actually after 10 o'clock at night, probably, because around 10,11, everybody, they need to sleep. Yeah, nobody interrupts us. So I think, oh, that's why I prefer work in those hours.
Yeah, me too. Like it happened to me before, but right now, because of my workload, because of my work, and that's why I have to work early. I have to be productive in the daytime. So that's why I said I want to be a bear. I’m trying. I'm trying to adjust myself.
But it’s kind of sad news to you. Because according to the research, this is inherent. People are basically born with this type. You born with your chronotype. It’s sort of your genes. So I don't know if you can change it, but it's interesting.
So any technology can modify my genes. I want to modify my genes, to be honest. That' s funny.
So what we just talked about in Chinese is about the one's very famous model/singer/ actress, Qu Ying. And she's very positive right now. I think she's around 50 years old. Yeah, she has a very interesting, admiring attitude to life.

Okay, any other questions? Yes, in Part 3, there are two sample questions. The first one is, why do people often believe news so quickly?
Well, I think the main reason is that people often react emotionally before they think critically. If a piece of news is shocking or dramatic, they may accept it immediately without checking whether it's true or not. Also, many people are uncomfortable with uncertainty, so they prefer a quick and simple explanation to a more complicated truth.
And the second question is, how does social media influence the way people understand news?
What do you think?
Well, I think social media makes people understand news in a faster but more emotional way. Very often people see headlines, short clips or comments before they know the full facts. As a result, their opinions are shaped not only by the news itself, but also by other people's reactions. Express information quickly, but it can also make people judge too quickly.
Yeah, I totally agree. Yeah, OK, that' s all for today. Thank you for listening. 那下一个的话,我们可以用那个 blame 是指责的意思,那在这里它是做一个动词,那我们 blame stress, lack of sleep or modern lifestyle in general.
There was the part that really made me think. I realized that when people hear shocking news, they often don't just want facts. They want a simple and emotional and satisfying explanation. They want one cause, one lesson, or even one person or happy to blame. I think that happens because uncertainty is very uncomfortable. If people can turn a tragedy into a clear warning, then they feel slightly safer, as if they have Learned the rule and can now avoid the same fate.
那这里有一个Emotionally satisfying.emotionally 就表示情绪上的,情感上的。 就你可以说 turn something into something。
This news also made me reflect on how people consume information today. In my opinion, many people are more drawn to dramatic stories than to careful analysis. They prefer certainty, even if it is false. So for me, this was not just a piece of news. It became a reminder that what actually happened and what people want to believe are often two very different things. That's why it stayed in my mind for such a long time.
然后下一个的是more drawn to dramatic stories than to careful analysis. 那还有最后一个是 stay in my mind,就是在我的脑海里面停留了很久,就 stay in my mind for such a long time.

So, Wing, after talking about everything, anything that we can use in our IELTS test? Yes, there is a topic in part 2 of speaking test related to this topic.
Describe a piece of news that make you think a lot.
You should say what the news was, when you heard it, where you heard it, and explain why it made you think a lot.
Can you give us an example?
Of course. One piece of news that made me think a lot was the sudden death of a well-known public figure in China. I heard about it quite recently on social media where the news spread very quickly and immediately triggered a lot of public discussion. Later, I also read comments and articles about it and I ended up discussing it in depth while preparing a podcast episode.
还有下一个的话就是in depth, depth是从deep来的, deep就是深度的意思,那in depth就是深度思考,所以discussing in depth.
What made this news especially striking was not just the event itself, but the reaction it created online. Almost instantly, people began offering explanations. Some said it was caused by overwork. Others blamed stress, lack of sleep or modern lifestyle in general. There were also rumours and very specific claims circulating online, even though there wasn't enough verified information to support them.

Yeah, I think maybe a more mature way to live is do the basics well, like what we talk about. Do the basics well, but don't worship them. Take your health seriously, but don't turn it into fear. Respect risk, but don't build your whole life around trying to eliminate every possible uncertainty or risk, because medicine is not all powerful. All the patterns, all the rules we set for ours is not all powerful. We cannot find every hidden problem in advance. We cannot prevent every tragedy, and we cannot save everyone. And that's the fact.
Yeah, I agree. So actually, another motto of mine is “you only live once and seize the days”.
Yeah, I always tell myself, embrace uncertainty, because uncertainty is not always bad. It can also bring happy surprises, like meeting people you love or walking into an amazing little hidden restaurant. There are surprises. They are good. So embrace the uncertainty.
Yeah, I remember I mentioned this, embrace the uncertainty in 2024, I guess, in the New Year Resolution episode, because like after experiencing many things, like I realize not everything is under control. So embrace the uncertainty can make myself happier. Yeah, yeah, and more comfortable, I guess.
Yeah, I think for me, I always try to ask myself these questions. How do I live well while I'm here? How do I live responsibly but not obsessively? How do I care for my body but not turn every habit into a moral drama? How do I take life seriously without becoming afraid of life itself?
Wow, well said.
Yeah, just try our best. And sometimes I make a very dark joke about life and death. I said like you just live once and sometimes you prepare everything. You try to be so cautious and careful about your life and then you walk out and probably one tragic traffic accidents happen and everything just poof.

Yeah, that's true. So after all this, I think the most important point, like when we read the news, we would try to have some takeaways, try to learn something from whatever we heard. We learned. And for me, the takeaway from this news is everything is important. Sleep is important. Rest is important. Work matters. Family matters. Regular physical checkups are really important, significant. And on top of that, with a better mental preparation that we cannot control everything. That's what I learn from this news.
Yeah, I totally agree with you. Because, for me, like I was struggling with balancing my life and work and sleep and my body health. However, I just realize one thing I cannot have all like, because I think just like in our Chinese saying, like the fate is fair, 命运是公平的, right? You cannot have everything. You have to sacrifice. So after this incident, I just look back to my lifestyle and I also try to sacrifice something that is not so important to me. And I try to let go some work and started to do some exercise and I try to sleep more. Just like two days ago when I was very tired at 8 o'clock in the evening, then I was like, okay, I should stop working. Then I just turned on the do not disturb mode on my phone and I just slept until 6:00 in the morning and I woke up fresh. I was like, wow, life is beautiful. You know, before when I woke up at 6:00, then I was like, such a busy day. This is terrible. I'm so tired. Something like that. But after this lesson, then I'll just try to balance my life. Then I think we all need to prioritize something that we think is really important.
There's a huge difference between saying there may have been and underlying heart issue and saying it was definitely this exact disease for this exact reason. None of us is doctor. Without proper physical exams, even doctor wouldn't dare make a diagnosis. And even with test results, doctors often say something like there is an 30/40/90% chance that you have this disease. So none of us is doctor. I think to pay respect to his family, his friends, we shouldn't just jump to conclusion. Yeah that' s true。
Another thing I wanna mention about relevance between two things, like we talk about the potential heart disease and then the running and then sleeping, right? When I read reports, scientific research reports, something called relevance. Relevance is a very interesting thing for me. For example, in summer, people keen to swim more. And also we read the facts that ice cream sales is higher than any time of the year. You can say there's some relevance between these two data, but you can't say one cause the other. You can't say people eat more ice cream because they swim more. That would be ridiculous for me when I read reports or when I read the numbers or always ask questions whether this is a cause, a real cause, or it's just relevance data. They are very difference. They don't directly draw to conclusions. Yeah, I agree.

Approximately some report claims 19.8 million lives in 2022 died of this disease, represent about 32% of all global deaths. So CAD could be the main cause. And that's why when we comes to Mr Zhang’s death, sudden death, a lot of people directly related to it, which makes sense because it's really, relatively speaking, it's really common for this kind of sudden death. But it's complicated. That's what I'm trying to say. Without further autopsy report, we cannot say whether or not this is the cause of his death, even it seems like it. So when we read news like that, I just wanna say we should be more specific and learn more before we just jump to the conclusion. Because when I say this event was heart related, it doesn't automatically tell me or tell you the root cause. Just like if my finger is bleeding, it could be just a scratch that a bandaid can fix. Or it could be serious enough that need to be hospitalized because I've cut an artery. Something like that. So we cannot just read the news and then jump to the conclusion.

Like cardiac sudden death is very scary, isn't it?
Because the most important part in our body is our heart. If we stop bumping, then, yeah, then we will die, right?
Yeah, the heart is really important for everything. Basically, when it comes to medical cases. I mean, it used to, right now is more complicated to certify death, but usually when your heart stop beating, it pretty much say you death.
Well, Wing, I'm not so sure if I mentioned it before. Actually last year when I was very busy, I suffered from a very huge workload and I don't think you guys can imagine my working hours were. I don't really remember because like my teaching hours were probably 50 something hours a week. Like basically I work eight hours a day, but I still have to do preparation and also give feedback or whatever. So basically my working hours are very long. And at that time, I remember I experienced the chest tightness a couple of times. I don't know how to describe this feeling, but I don't feel well. Yeah, so this is not the worst case. It's like once when I was asleep, my chest hurt. Wow, then I was like, what the heck? Am I gonna die? So I was so scared. Then at that time, I realize like, I should stop working like this. Yeah, like crazily, I should balance my life and work.
Yeah, do regular physical checkups are really important. So you know whether you have a problem or not, or is like a permanent thing or is temporary thing. So you know better about your body if you do regular checkups. So what I try to say is, now here is the word cardiac sudden death in Chinese is 心源性猝死. So just based on the word, it shows it's related to the heart. It sounds very specific. But what I want to say here, I'm not the doctor, but from what I read, this kind of thing is very complicated. It's one kind of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease is very common, especially the one called coronary artery diseases, or CAD, is a primary type.

Yes. I'm not so sure if Marathon is one of the extreme sports. If I'm wrong, just correct me.
Yeah, to be fair, exercise is always important for us, no matter what. We need to move our body. It’s good for us physically and mentally. And for me, I like running because I get that runners as high. All the dopamine makes me happier after running. So it give me not just physical help, but also mental help as well. Yeah, so I like running. After the news, I did some research. I just see whether workouts are really important or good for us. And then I read something from WHO, World Health Organization, and it reported in 2024 that 31% of adults worldwide still did not meet the recommended activity levels. The Rachel also says that people who are insufficiently active have a 20% to 30% higher risk of death than people who are sufficiently active. So overall, I think regular exercise still very good and protective.
Yeah, so one dramatic event does not suddenly cancel a huge body of evidence. Just like I mentioned, our body is really complicated. And so it's not just one body part stops functioning, then the whole body stops functioning, I think. Yeah, of course. Like the heart disease is an exclusive example. Yeah, so I think there are many reasons to be blamed, not just running.

She said in one show, I don't need to make a lot of money because I only buy cheap things. And also she gave an example. Her earrings were really cheap. And then the audience asked her, so if it's that cheap, then the matter would be bad and that would cause your ears allergic. And she said like, well, the money that you save can just buy some medication to help you deal with that allergy. I really admire her attitude.
Yeah, me too. That's why it becomes my motto.
So since we talk about the chronotype, now, this is something that we wanna talk about during this episode. It’s about all the rumors or reasons or diagnosis of Mr Zhang's sudden death online. So that's what we wanna talk about. One thing is the chronotype, and then the other thing I wanna mention is about the running thing. Since we, Yao and I, talk so much about what happened to us before, we focus so much on our health, our physical appearance. And yeah, Mr Zhang did a lot of running as well. Yeah, I think he did half Marathon at some point.
Yeah, and he ran a lot. Once he said like, even though he only slept for a few hours, however, he would still insist running because he thought it was a good thing to do. Yeah, and Yao also mention. That after this news, your friend found a lot of gyms pretty empty.
Yeah, so I'm not so sure if it's because of the news. Like people care much about their physical well being before probably like they believe even though we were tired, we still need to exercise to maintain our physical and mental health. However, after these news, they stop going to the gym or whatever, I don't know, probably just an excuse.
Such an interesting timing. Yeah, I don't know if you know that, but I was told a long time ago whoever wanna do Marathon needs to be trained. You cannot just do it all at once. Even you're a runner, you still need to practice to do the Marathon. You can’t just like show up and finish it. It's different and it's really dangerous.

By the way, when we talk about sleep, I found something very interesting. Just a fun fact. Why is that? When you talk about the bio clock, there's a word for, it's called chronotype. A chronotype. Basically, it's talk about our natural way of wakefulness and sleep at a specific times within a 24 hour cycle.
So it's a very interesting word here. There's a research to describe for us, for human being, there are four types of chronotypes. They are lions, bears, wolves and dolphins. So they use animals to describe different chronotypes. So lions are the early kind, wake early, energetic in the morning and productive before noon. Bears are the one who follow the sun, productive in the middle of the day, and wolves prefer late waking, high energy in the evening. And dolphins just eratic sleep patterns, often light sleepers. So there are four sleep types. That being said, everyone is different. Yeah.
What chronotype do you think you are?
Well, right now I think I'm more like a wolf. However, I want to be a bear.

What chronotype do you think you are?
Well, right now I think I'm more like a wolf. However, I want to be a bear.

I need to sleep like after 12 or something like that. So I kind of get used to it. So the people say, oh, you should sleep at 9 or you should sleep at 10 or something like that. But it doesn't apply on me because I'm not that kind of person. So this pattern doesn't work on me.
That sounds like my dad. Really? He always nags me like, hey, go to bed. Why are you still awake? You should go to bed early and wake up early. And the thing is, I can't. I just can't. I tried. I can't. And the funny thing is, my dad has a friend who is pretty old, like 80 years old or something, and he's pretty healthy, too.
He's supposed to sleep early and rise early, right?
Yes. And his physical check was good, you know, as good as an old man could have, right?
That sounds good.
And he said, I just can't go to bed early. I went to bed around 2,3:00.
Oh, that's crazy.
Here comes to what we wanna talk about, Mr Zhang. Everybody is unique. Our body is unique. Some people's inner clock is just later than others. Oh yeah, we just different. So it's not like, oh, you're not sleep enough, then definitely result in something bad. It's not that straightforward. Like my dad's friend, yeah, he's like, I just need to go to bed late. That's me. And I know some people who actually sleep like six hours and they still function as well. Some of my friends sleep nine hours. They wake up like they haven't slept at all night.
Well, I think everyone has their bio clock. Sleeping time is one thing and sleeping quality is another thing. That's why we go back to our topic today. Like there are many reasons why something happens, not just one, not just two. Like there are a lot. Yeah, exactly.

Yeah. So to be fair, I think all of us try to learn something from others mistakes, so we can avoid that mistakes. What I can see is we love to find patterns in our life, right? Yeah, from others, from us, we would try to find the patterns, like the pattern of what is good life, the patterns to get rich, the patterns to get healthier, the patterns to get whatever you wanna get. So we want the patterns. I want patterns too. I love patterns. Or you can say it's a methods or patterns, which I found it very interesting because that's how our civilization gets better. For example, that's how our science becomes science, because we are looking for patterns. But when it comes to life, I think it's hard to find patterns. For example, what kind of patterns can guarantee you to find your partners? To be honest, life has so many things that we cannot expect.
Yeah, I think when you say you're really into patterns, probably you mean you're really into logic. And like what you mentioned earlier, like if we find the patterns, we can avoid some mistakes so that we can have a smoother life, we can have a better life or stuff like that, right? But don't forget like everyone is unique, like one's pattern can't be applied to another.
Yeah, I think the whole episode we try to say, don't do things too extremely, even finding patterns, don't go too extreme. Just try to find a balance. There's nothing is guaranteed. I don't think there's anything is guaranteed in our life.
No, nothing. Like almost everyone asks me, Yao, you should sleep earlier because you see you have a really terrible dark circles on your face. Then I was like, yeah, I tried to sleep early, but you know, for me, it's really hard for me to sleep early because I'm not that kind of person. I'm like a night owl.
Me too.

Anything that goes too extreme is always not good.
Yeah, that's true.
I think our ancestors or Taoism or the Tai Chi, even the Tai Chi logo already tells us nothing is good when it goes extreme. It's always the white side has a black dot and the black side has a white dot because that's called balance.
Yeah, that's a very, that's the philosophy.
Yeah, if our listeners are interested in this kind of topic, we can talk about it too.
Yeah, I think probably some of them would be interested and you can share your comments. You can share your feelings into our comment section. And then so that we know what you're interested about.

Yeah, sometimes if we care too much about this and then we become a control freak. Yeah, if something is out of control, then we'll be freaked out and we gonna be helpless again. So this is a really bad cycling, I guess.
Yeah, it's like a spiral, downward spiral.
And sometimes even worse, like some control freak, they cannot control their life, then they will control their partner in their marriage. Like I've noticed a lot of couples around me like that. I don't know why. Like usually the girls will be the control freak and then they will just control everything there husbands have done, like what time they would go home, stuff like that, like too private and I'm not gonna mention here.
Yeah, I think I have some friends like that too. Yeah, but I'm afraid of the guy. So I saw. Him so miserable in his marriage because his wife tries to control a lot of things. But the thing is, even the wife tries so hard to control everything, it's something still she cannot control. I don't wanna talk about it too much, but it's not good for their marriage. But anyway
I hope his wife is not listening.
Okay? Yeah, I don't know his wife, so it's fine.
Who knows? Could be one of the followers here and then she might be the spy. Nah, I’m just kidding. Yeah. Oh my.

Hi, everyone. It' s gossip English time. This is Wing and I'm Yao. Let's learn English through gossip.
Hey, Yao, how's everything going? Have you heard the news of education influencer Zhang Xuefeng?
Yeah, of course. I'm so sorry for the loss. I remember the night when my friend, who is also a teacher, send a message to our group. I was so shocked. I couldn't believe it. Since we are in the same industry, my friends and I are also under a huge workload and pressure. As I mentioned before, at the time, it felt like a wake-up call for us, a reminder that we really need to take care of ourselves.
At first, I thought it was fake news. Oh, really? And I also didn't really learn it from official accounts or official channels. And it's more like in one of the group chat and someone suddenly say, oh, he passed away. So I thought like, oh, you must be some fake news. And then the next day everybody talked about it and I knew it was true.
Yeah, there are many haters on the internet, right?
Yes. Have you heard what his daughter reply to you? His friend, when his friends do a livestreaming, I think. What? I didn't watch that livestreaming. What happened?
People did a screenshot of what his daughter replied. His daughter said, let me do it in Chinese. Oh, that' s so sad. Such a white lie.
Yeah, he's such an impactful influencer and everybody knows him. And I felt it very shocked.
Yeah, same here.
But today I actually want us to talk about it from different perspective. Because when I read all those social media articles or videos, I found something very similar, which I quite disagree with. So today I'm going to talk about it with some different opinions. And I hope haters don't hate me.
No, I think people have different opinions. So it makes sense, right? If we have different opinions. So what is it about?
