你可能听说过《孙子兵法》。
You’ve probably heard of The Art of War.
你也可能听说过孙子。
And you’ve probably heard of Sun Tzu.
但这本书的第一句话，并不是大多数人所期待的那样。
But the very first sentence of this book is not what most people expect.
它并不是从策略、巧妙的计谋，或者如何取胜开始的。
It doesn’t start with strategy, or clever tricks, or how to win.
它是这样开始的：
It starts with this:
孙子曰：兵者，国之大事，死生之地，存亡之道，不可不察也。
Sun Tzu said: War is a matter of vital importance to the state. It is the ground of life and death, the path of survival and destruction. It must be carefully studied.
这句话的意思是：
This means:
战争是国家最重要的事情。
War is a matter of vital importance to the state.
它关系到生与死。
It is the ground of life and death.
也关系到存与亡。
It is the path of survival and destruction.
所以必须被认真地研究和思考。
It must be carefully studied.

从一开始，你就能看出一个重要的点。
Right away, you can see something important.
孙子并没有试图让战争听起来很刺激。
Sun Tzu is not trying to make war sound exciting.
他让它听起来非常严肃。
He’s making it sound serious.
在他看来，战争不是用来展示力量的。
To him, war isn’t about showing power.
而是关于后果的。
It’s about consequences.

“国之大事”这句话，意思是国家的大事情。
The phrase “国之大事” means “a great matter of the state.”
这意味着战争影响的，不只是士兵。
That means war doesn’t just affect soldiers.
它还影响家庭、城市、领导者，
It affects families, cities, leaders,
以及整个国家的未来。
and the future of an entire country.

接下来是“死生之地，存亡之道”。
Then comes “死生之地，存亡之道.”
这里的意义更加深刻。
This is where it becomes even more intense.
战争是决定生死的地方。
War is the place where life and death are decided.
也是通向生存或毁灭的道路。
And the path that leads either to survival or to ruin.

所以，在他谈论战术之前，
So before he talks about tactics,
在他解释如何取胜之前，
before he explains how to win,
他先讲的是责任。
he talks about responsibility.
他在说：如果你不认真思考，
He’s saying: if you don’t think carefully,
你失去的不只是胜负，
you don’t just lose—
还会让很多人承受痛苦。
people suffer.

And that’s why the last part matters so much:
“不可不察也”。
“不可不察也.”
它的意思是：这件事绝对不能被忽视。
It means this must not be ignored.
必须被认真地观察和分析。
It must be carefully examined.

Even though this is about war,
但它在今天依然适用。
it still applies today.
在生活中，我们也会做出有后果的决定。
In life, we also make decisions that have consequences.
有时候我们很着急。
Sometimes we rush.
有时候我们没有想清楚。
Sometimes we don’t think enough.

孙子其实是在提醒我们一件很简单的事情：
Sun Tzu is reminding us of something simple:
在行动之前，先理解。
before you act, understand.
因为最聪明的人，
Because the smartest person
不是第一个行动的人。
isn’t the one who moves first.
而是第一个看清楚的人。
It’s the one who sees clearly first.
