Xiaoman, Grain Buds is the eighth of the 24 solar terms and the second one in summer. An ancient Chinese saying captures its essence: At this time, all things grow moderately full. In northern China, this means summer‑ripening grains like wheat start to plump up but are not yet fully mature—only partially full, not completely ripe. In the south, a proverb states, no full water at Grain Buds, dry the field banks up, where “full” refers to abundant rainfall. Either way, Grain Buds embodies a subtle Eastern wisdom: it is not absolute perfection, but moderate richness with room to grow.
