Xia Zhi, Summer Solstice is the 10th of the 24 solar terms, and the fourth one of summer. Its arrival marks the peak of hot summer. On this day, the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer, giving the Northern Hemisphere the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Everything is bathed in bright, golden sunlight. However, the Summer Solstice isn't actually the hottest time of the year. In meteorology, there is something called the "heat lag" effect. Think of the earth like a pot on a stove: even though the sun's heat is at its strongest, the ground and air are still slowly soaking it up. So, the real scorching days are still ahead!
