The diagram illustrates the process by which rain-shadow deserts are formed as moist air travels inland across a mountain range.
Overall, the formation of a rain-shadow desert is a seven-stage natural process that begins with moist winds blowing inland from the sea and ends with dry air descending on the opposite side of the mountains, creating arid conditions where little or no rainfall occurs.
Initially, winds approach the coastline from over the sea before being forced upwards as they encounter a mountain range. As this moist air rises along the windward side of the mountains, it gradually cools, causing clouds to develop. Continued cooling eventually results in precipitation, with rain falling over the higher elevations of the windward slope. Consequently, much of the moisture carried by the air mass is released before it crosses the mountain peak.
After passing over the summit, the resulting considerably drier air continues its movement down the leeward side of the mountains. As it descends towards lower altitudes, no further cloud formation or rainfall occurs since the air has already lost most of its moisture. These dry winds then continue across the inland region, where the persistent lack of precipitation produces an extensive rain-shadow desert that may extend for thousands of kilometres beyond the mountain range.
