“Lusanga, Flower of the Moon” is one of the central love songs in the third part of River Crossing. It is performed as a solo by João, the young Portuguese naturalist.

After days of observing the forest, João discovers a mysterious plant. During the daylight hours, it appears lifeless and without flowers. But when the moon rises, its white petals slowly unfold and release their fragrance into the night air. Following the habits of European science, João studies it through notes, measurements, and classification. He even prepares to give it a Latin name. Yet when Nsá leads him into the forest after dark, he discovers that the land has known this flower for generations. The local people call it Lusanga, and they carry ancient stories about the flower that only blooms beneath the moon.

This night becomes a turning point for João.

Under the moonlight filtering through the branches, the forest transforms into another world: shadows of leaves are drawn across the earth, the scent of wild plants fills the air, the river whispers in the distance, and the hidden flower slowly opens. For the first time, João realizes that knowledge is not only something to collect and categorize. Some things must be approached through patience, listening, and respect.

At the same time, this is the moment when João begins to truly see Nsá. She is no longer simply his guide into the forest, but a person with her own knowledge, memory, and beauty. As he watches the flower bloom beside her, he understands that the greatest mysteries of the world cannot always be captured in books—they must be experienced.

Musically, the song blends the tenderness of Portuguese lyrical traditions with the atmosphere of the Congolese night forest. The flowing guitar lines evoke moonlight moving through trees, while the repeated refrain:

“Lusanga, Lusanga, flower of the night”

creates the feeling of an ancient forest song. The flower becomes a symbol of the meeting between two ways of knowing: European scientific curiosity and the living wisdom of the Kongo world.

Lusanga, Flower of the Moon

João’s Solo

Verse 1

I thought I knew the forest.

I came with my book and my pen.

I named every leaf in daylight,

I measured every stem.

I followed the morning shadows,

I counted every tree.

But the forest kept a secret

it never gave to me.

Verse 2

Tonight Nsá led me deeper,

where the old trees touch the sky.

The river was breathing softly,

the night birds were passing by.

The air was full of fragrance—

wild jasmine after rain,

the sweet smell of crushed leaves,

the earth beneath the flame.

Verse 3

The moon fell through the branches,

like silver through a veil.

The shadows of the leaves

were drawing stories on the trail.

The roots became like rivers,

the stones began to shine.

The forest was a cathedral

without a wall or sign.

Chorus

Lusanga, Lusanga, flower of the night.
Open your petals, open your light.

Lusanga, Lusanga, under the moon.
The forest has waited, the forest has known.

Oh, flower of the night,
why did I search the day?

You were not hiding from me—
I was looking the wrong way.

Verse 4

And then I saw the flower.

White as the morning star.

Its petals slowly opened

like a door from worlds afar.

I forgot my little notebook.

I forgot my careful name.

For one moment in the darkness,

nothing stayed the same.

Verse 5

I wanted to write its Latin name,

to place it in my book.

"Lusanga nocturna..."

I whispered as I looked.

But Nsá smiled beside me.

She knew this flower before.

Her people carried its story

long before I reached this shore.

Verse 6

And then the moonlight touched her,

through branches high above.

It traced the curve of her shoulders,

the quiet shape of her neck.

The forest held its silence.

The river slowed its song.

I had crossed so many oceans,

but this was where I belonged.

Chorus

Lusanga, Lusanga, flower of the night.
Open your petals, open your light.

Lusanga, Lusanga, under the moon.
The stars are singing, the earth is in bloom.

Oh, flower of the night,
teach my heart to see.

Some things are not discovered—
they are given freely.

Bridge

I came here searching for wonders.

I came here chasing the unknown.

But the greatest mystery

was standing beside me all along.

Not a flower.

Not a river.

Not a name in a book.

But the quiet eyes of Nsá

and the way she made me look.

Final Chorus

Lusanga, Lusanga, flower of the night.
Open your petals, open your light.

Lusanga, Lusanga, sing your song.
You were here forever, I was the one who was gone.

Oh, flower of the night,
under the forest moon—

Tonight I found a flower.
Tonight I found you.
