《The Leaf I Could Not Keep》
Solo for João.
On the ship home, João carries the plants, specimens, and notes he collected, watching the distant shore disappear. He has learned how to preserve leaves, flowers, and names—but not the one thing he cannot bear to lose.
A quiet folk ballad of farewell and longing, the song captures João’s realization that he may bring an entire new world home with him, but he must leave the person he loves behind.

The Leaf I Could Not Keep
Verse 1
I gathered leaves from distant trees,
I learned the rivers by their names.
I filled my hands with roots and seeds,
Yet nothing came the way you came.
The wind remembers every hill,
The sea remembers every shore.
I write the names of every flower,
But yours I cannot hold no more.
Chorus
Oh, little leaf, don't fall away.
Stay with me one more day.
The wind can take the birds that fly,
The sea can take the morning sky.
Oh, little leaf, don't leave my hand.
Home is farther than the land.
I crossed the world so wide and blue—
I brought back all... except for you.
Verse 2
I pressed the blossoms, one by one,
Between the pages, safe and dry.
They'll keep their shape for many years;
A living heart is not so kind.
Some flowers bloom where no one sees,
Some never grow in foreign ground.
I carry forests in my boxes,
But leave my only spring behind.
Bridge
If every tree could speak your name,
If every tide could turn once more,
I'd trade the maps, the books, the crowns,
To hear your voice beside the shore.
Final Chorus
Oh, little leaf, don't fall away.
Stay with me one more day.
The wind can keep the stars above,
The earth can keep each seed I love.
Oh, little leaf, don't leave my hand.
Home is where you used to stand.
I crossed the world so wide and blue—
I found a thousand flowers...
...and lost you.
