另一位菲尔兹奖得主邓煜，也特别喜欢诗。他不光喜欢古诗，还自己写诗。

Three out of the four Fields Medaliststhis year can speak Chinese. One of them is John Pardon, an American mathematician whose Chinese name is Bai Jiewen. When he was in college, many of his classmates chose French or German as their foreign language.But he chose Chinese.Why?Because he thought Chinesewas mostdifficultand challenging.Very mathematician of him, right?In his senior year, at just 20, he solved a knot theory problem that had been unsolved for 30 years.That same year, hehelped his Chinese debate team win the world championship in its division.And he’s not just fluent in Chinese.He also loves classical Chinese poetry. There’s a picture I found really interesting. A math formula, right next to the Tang Dynasty poem River Snow.The poem is all about silence, solitude and staying strong. Maybe that’s somethinghe can relate to.Another Fields Medalist, Deng Yu, is also a big fan of poetry.He doesn’t just read it. He writes poetry himself. So why do these top mathematicians love Chinese poetry?Maybe because math and poetry have something in common:They both have rules, but they also leave room for endless possibilities.Deng Yu once talked about how much he likes Li Shangyin’s“Jinse.”It’s just eight lines and 56 characters, with a very strict poetic structure.But within those strict rules, there’s so much meaning.That’s a little like mathematics.You can pack awholecomplicated system into a single equation,and then use that framework to explore endless possibilities.When Deng Yu went back to New York for an academic conference, he returned to a city where he had spent three years studying and doing research, he shared a line from a poem by Su Shi. Su Shi wrotethis after traveling to the capital with his younger brother to take the imperial exams.The road ahead was long and uncertain. Even the weak donkey pulling their cart was struggling along the way. Very vivid. About a thousand years later, Deng Yu was standing in New York, andmaybe in his own way, he understood that feeling.It also reminds me of something Liu Zhiyu, Deng Yu’s former teammate on China’s math olympiad team, wrote in his book,“Let the wise be your companions.” What we read, watch and listen to every day slowly shapes the world inside us.Reading an ancient poem is like having a conversation with someone who lived hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago.It may not solve any of our problems.But it might give us a little strength to keep going.As Deng Yu hasput it, it doesn’t have to be useful. Just appreciating its beauty is enough.
