Three out of the four Fields Medaliststhis year can speak Chinese. One of them is John Pardon, an American mathematician whose Chinese name is Bai Jiewen. When he was in college, many of his classmates chose French or German as their foreign language. But he chose Chinese. Why?Because he thought Chinesewas mostdifficultand challenging.Very mathematician of him, right? In his senior year, at just 20, he solved a knot theory problem that had been unsolved for 30 years. That same year, hehelped his Chinese debate team win the world championship in its division. And he’s not just fluent in Chinese. He also loves classical Chinese poetry. There’s a picture I found really interesting. A math formula, right next to the Tang Dynasty poem River Snow. The poem is all about silence, solitude and staying strong. Maybe that’s somethinghe can relate to.Another Fields Medalist, Deng Yu, is also a big fan of poetry. He doesn’t just read it. He writes poetry himself. So why do these top mathematicians love Chinese poetry?Maybe because math and poetry have something in common:They both have rules, but they also leave room for endless possibilities.Deng Yu once talked about how much he likes Li Shangyin’s“Jinse.”It’s just eight lines and 56 characters, with a very strict poetic structure. But within those strict rules, there’s so much meaning. That’s a little like mathematics. You can pack awholecomplicated system into a single equation, and then use that framework to explore endless possibilities. When Deng Yu went back to New York for an academic conference, he returned to a city where he had spent three years studying and doing research, he shared a line from a poem by Su Shi. Su Shi wrotethis after traveling to the capital with his younger brother to take the imperial exams. The road ahead was long and uncertain. Even the weak donkey pulling their cart was struggling along the way. Very vivid. About a thousand years later, Deng Yu was standing in New York, andmaybe in his own way, he understood that feeling. It also reminds me of something Liu Zhiyu, Deng Yu’s former teammate on China’s math olympiad team, wrote in his book,“Let the wise be your companions.” What we read, watch and listen to every day slowly shapes the world inside us.Reading an ancient poem is like having a conversation with someone who lived hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago.It may not solve any of our problems. But it might give us a little strength to keep going. As Deng Yu hasput it, it doesn’t have to be useful. Just appreciating its beauty is enough.
Rest in Peace I’ve been seeing videos of people coming out to the Grafton Street to remember Glen Hansard, the same street where he used to busk and where Once was filmed. Rest in Peace. I really like his music movies actually talked about them on my podcast years ago. And what a lot of people don’t know is that Once actually came out of Glen’s music. The director, John Carney, used to play bass in the band Glen founded. They had known each other for decades, and they’d always had the idea of making a movie about street musicians in Dublin. Before the movie was officially filmed, Glen had already written what would later become the movie’s signature song, Falling Slowly. And later, a lot of the emotions and the story itself grew around the music. Originally, the plan was to have a professional actor play the male lead. But Carney decided to have Glen play the role himself. So a real street musician ended up playing a street musician. The whole movie was made for only about $150,000, and they shot it in just 17 days. There were no fancy sets, and a lot of it was filmed in the same place where Glen used to busk for years. No one expected the movie to become such a hit. And Falling Slowly went on to win the Oscar. Glen’s real life also had a lot in common with the character. He left school when he was 13 and spent years making a living by playing music on the streets of Dublin. He spent his whole life making Irish folk music, keeping it simple and honest. Maybe that’s why his music is so moving. There’s a line from Falling Slowly: “Falling slowly, sing your melody, I’ll sing along.” Yes. You left your melody with us. We’ll keep listening. Rest in Peace, Glen.
“People understood what was going on really well in two dimensions, but we lacked the tools to study higher dimensions.” 她说的是We,不是I。
"If you want to play professionally, you can't be ashamed of who you are." Watching the World Cup recently, I was really inspired by Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha and Haaland, who are fighting for their countries. It reminded me of a line from the movie Pelé: Birth of a Legend. If you wanna play professionally, you can’t be ashamed of who you are. Vozinha was 40 years old when he finally stepped onto the World Cup stage for the first time. After the match, he ran into the stands and hugged his mom. That touching moment reminded me of Pelé. As a boy from a Brazilian slum, he reached a bigger stage also because of the support from his family. When Pelé was young, he didn’t have a real football, so he filled socks with newspapers. Even mangoes became his training balls. No football boots? He played barefoot. No football field? He trained on dirt roads.By today’s standards, those were far from proper training conditions. But it was exactly in that environment, with his determination, that he developed his own way of playing football. That’s why the movie highlights the Brazilian football tradition called Ginga. When most people questioned this style and wanted him to change, Pelé stayed with it.Many people see Ginga as just a skill. But for Pelé, it was much more than that. It was a way to turn his environment into an advantage, and a way to express who he was.And when I look at Cape Verde, I see something similar.Today, Cape Verde is a middle-income country. But for a long time, they didn’t even have a standard international football stadium. The national team had to play home games abroad, until China helped build the national stadium.Without expensive facilities, they relied on teamwork.Without superstar players, they relied on everyone’s contribution. In a way, this is Cape Verde’s own Ginga.Vozinha’s story shows this even more.He was turned down by European youth teams many times as a teenager due to his small frame and only went pro at 25. He was always a little behind that timeline. But he kept moving forward in his own way.Haaland’s story is another example. His talent is undeniable. He could have chosen a stronger football nation. But he chose Norway.Because for him, representing his own country is also part of the dream. He didn’t choose the easiest path. He chose the one that felt true to him. When he celebrates his goals with his meditation pose, I feel he knows clearly what he is chasing.Maybe that’s what makes football so fascinating. It has systems and a common path. But everyone can still find their own Ginga.

Why are the French so chill and effortless chic? They just do what they want, go with what feels comfortable. A taxi driver noticed that the car next to us was probably driven by Chinese, he immediately rolled down the window to say hi for us. At cafés, most seats face outward so you can enjoy the view while you eat. They eat veryslowly, as if every meal were a small ceremony. Not like me... Even soda water is served in a wine glass. If a table is set for two, no matter how you ask, they won’t squeeze in a third chair. They dress with elegance,at every age.Elegance matters more than youth. Maybe it’s like what CocoChanel once said: Always leave the house having fixed yourself up a little. You never know — maybe that’s the day you’ll have a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny. Though I'm still too lazy myself... And yet, they’re never overdressed. They don’t chase trends — just choose what feels most like themselves. Truth is, most people are too busy with themselves to notice you. Just do your thing. Unhurried. Living completely in the moment.
