Now that we’ve passed the hottest days of summer, a new season arrives. Li Qiu, the Beginning of Autumn, is the 13th of the 24 solar terms, marking the first brushstroke of fall. It dips into the lingering summer heat and draws a soft line across heaven and earth, letting summer fade gently into the background. Look closely at the Chinese characters for “Beginning of Autumn.” The first means “start.” The second is made of two parts: one for grain, one for fire. It hints at ripening crops — and also the mix of heat and harvest. But Beginning of Autumn doesn’t mean autumn has truly arrived in weather terms. As an old saying goes, "There is still a hot spell after autumn starts." The scorching days, often called the "Autumn Tiger," may strike back anytime. The summer sun is still strong, and the afternoon heat can be intense, showing summer’s last stubbornness before it leaves.
