Chushu, End of Heat, is the 14th of the 24 solar terms, and the second one in autumn. An ancient book explains it simply: "Chu" means "to stop." From this day on, the summer heat begins to fade. But that doesn't mean the heat vanishes overnight. In southern China, people say autumn and summer are still wrestling. The daytime sun remains bright, and afternoons can still feel warm. But this heat has lost its summer punch. It's no longer sticky or suffocating. Instead, it feels dry and clear — like a blanket warmed by the sun. Comfortable, but not burning anymore. In the north, the change is sharper. Day and night become two different worlds. A thin shirt fails to keep out the evening breeze now. People can finally turn off the air conditioning, open the windows, and let the natural wind flow through.
