Many people suffering from anxiety or depression never find out, because the body's signals get blamed on spicy food, stress, or a bad week. In this episode, host Dr. Gerald Anthony talks with Biman, a Beijing-based AI scientist and entrepreneur who spent years at Microsoft Research and now builds technology for early mental health screening. Biman explains how his team uses "vocal biomarkers" (patterns in how you speak, not what you say) so that about one minute of speech can flag depression risk. He describes why people are so often underdiagnosed, how culture and environment "miscalibrate" our inner compass, why even doctors cannot "cure" most conditions but can help people manage them, and how phones, wearables, games, and even a smart stress ball can help people notice problems earlier. The conversation closes with a lesson from Lao Tzu about sailing instead of rowing.

In this episode, we unpack

  • Depression and anxiety are widely underdiagnosed. Biman calls this the biggest problem: many people cannot tell whether what they feel comes from the mind or the body.

  • Your voice can carry early warning signals. He says about 1 minute of speech can be screened for depression risk using vocal biomarkers such as tone, pauses, and word choice. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis.

  • It's how you speak, not what you say. The method does not rely on the content of your words, so telling someone "I feel great" does not change the result, he says.

  • Body symptoms can be mind signals. Stomach aches, chest tightness, and pains (somatic symptoms) are often blamed on food or fatigue, when they may signal anxiety or high stress.

  • Think of mental health as an inner "compass." Culture, circle, and access to care decide how well that compass is calibrated, and tools can help recalibrate it.

  • Treat the root cause, not just the symptoms. "Take a vacation" or "drink hot water" targets symptoms; diagnostics aim at causes such as sleep, stress hormones, and lifestyle.

  • Early detection beats late treatment. Biman says most conditions are harder to treat the later they are found, and that phones make screening scalable where specialists are scarce.

  • AI supports doctors; it doesn't replace them. AI can collect information so a doctor may spend about 5 minutes reviewing a chart, he explains, which protects a scarce resource: doctors' time.

  • Simple tools can anchor you in the present. A stress ball, a deep breath, or washing your face can interrupt runaway thoughts, because anxiety is mostly about the future or the past.

Engineering Wellbeing

A podcast where we explore Wellbeing as a BRIDGE. In each monthly series, we take one theme and explore it through four complimentary lenses: a systems level framing, a technology perspective, a specialist or scientific viewpoint, and a cultural Chinese context lens. Because Wellbeing is never one-dimensional; it is biology, psychology, social, cultural, and technology all at once.
