In 1906, a statue was erected in London to commemorate a brown terrier dog "done to death" through vivisection, ending with the inscription: "Men and women of England, how long shall these things be?" Over a century later, UK journalist and former Green Party councillor Martin Whybrow takes this unanswered question as the title of his book, drawing on over 60 interviews to chart the evolution of Britain's animal rights movement since the 1960s. In this conversation, we trace Martin's transition from local party politics to frontline advocacy, the rise and state suppression of direct action from early hunt saboteurs and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) to Animal Rebellion, and the structural lobbying power of animal agriculture. We also examine the strategic tensions shaping the movement today: whether undercover investigations and social-media-driven protests are losing their ability to reach the public middle ground, how welfarist compromises and certification schemes like RSPCA Assured risk "welfare washing," and what grassroots initiatives—from the UK's Vegan Land Movement to slaughterhouse worker transitions in Uganda and a 7,000-km coastal walk in India—reveal about land and just transition. Without a technological silver bullet like cultured meat to resolve a moral crisis, how can advocates actually reduce demand while sustaining community against isolation and burnout?
