Hey guys! It's August 26th, 2024. Today’s news is about tourism. We know that the pandemic has caused a tremendous loss to the tourism industry. As everything comes back to the new normal, people start to go travelling again. As a result, lots of places are now suffering from the surge of tourists, and the troubles they bring. The backlash against tourism On Friday Spain, the world’s second-biggest tourist destination (after France), reported that it had 9.3m international visitors in June. In the first half of 2024, visitor numbers were up by 13.3% compared with last year as tourists returned after covid. That is causing a backlash. Residents in Barcelona, for instance, have taken part in anti-tourist protests. Athenian activists have put on funerals for their dead neighbourhoods. Authorities in Japan have put up a fence to spoil a popular view of Mount Fuji and prevent tourists gathering. In places like Barcelona residents complain about crowds, dirty streets and higher prices. In response, some cities are seeking to limit tourist numbers; new policies include entry fees, limits on cruise-ship berths and crackdowns on short-term lets. Balancing the interests of visitors and locals is a challenge for policymakers. Receipts from tourism can be invested in infrastructure and higher-value-added sectors, as has happened in Italy and, more recently, Mexico. On Friday Spain, the world’s second-biggest tourist destination (after France), reported that it had 9.3m international visitors in June. Hey guys! It's Aug 11th 2024. Today’s news is about the Marvel Universe. Recently, it has got into some trouble because audiences are tired of an excess of superheroes. Let’s listen to the news. Marvel searches for a hero All is not well in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once a dominant presence in the entertainment industry, the Disney-owned franchise is in a rut. Analysts blame a surfeit of superhero films, which has dulled audiences’ appetites. The MCU’s rival, the DC Extended Universe, is also struggling. But the “Deadpool” series has an advantage that other superhero films lack: it presents a caustic, self-referential parody of the genre and its tropes. By importing “Deadpool” from 20th Century, a Disney-owned studio, the MCU is trying to have it both ways. Had enough of superheroes? Hey guys! It's July 16th 2024. Today’s news is about the Olympics, and in particular swimming. Do you know which countries are the best in Swimming in terms of winning Olympic medals? In the past, the States and Australia were two countries that took over 50% of the Gold Medals. Particularly, Australians are very strong in women's 100m freestyle. However, that has also brought troubles to them. Why is that? 【听力原文】Australian swimming’s deep pool of talent Olympic finals usually bring together the best athletes from around the globe. Occasionally, though, one country’s depth of talent can skew that outcome: Australia’s in swimming, for example. In the women’s 100m freestyle, five currently-competing Australians have recorded one of the 25 fastest times in history. Yet countries can only enter two athletes per Olympic event. Consequently Australia’s national trials, which began on Monday in Brisbane, could see faster times than the Olympics this summer. The contestants in Brisbane include Emma McKeon, the current Olympic champion; Cate Campbell, the fourth-fastest woman ever; and Mollie O’Callaghan, last year’s world champion. Whatever happens, at least one of them will be excluded from the Olympic team—more if other decorated swimmers, such as Ms Campbell’s sister Bronte or Shayna Jack (a five-time world champion) spring a surprise. Olympic rules mean that more countries have a greater chance to win medals. But they also mean some world-class athletes are left out. 1.Olympic finals usually bring together the best athletes from around the globe. The results were clear: all of the studies showed significant disruption to the neural networks of internet-addicted teens. Moreover, all of them found that this disruption directly contributes to negative tendencies that are strikingly similar to those of drug addicts. These include compulsions, cravings and lying about use. The studies had one more thing in common: all of them were conducted in Asian countries. But this is probably because Asians fret more than Westerners about internet addiction, rather than because Western teens are any less hooked. SYN influence, affect, shape. <The experience had moulded and coloured her whole life.> 这次经历影响了她的一生。 n. 霉;霉菌 < There's mould on the cheese.> 干酪发霉了。 【逐句分析】 ①Many people worry that too much screen time for youngsters could be a bad thing. Hey guys! It's June 17th, 2024. Today’s news is about British currency. Do you know Charles III is now appearing on the notes? Do you know when was the photo taken? And how long will that last? Let’s find out from the news! Charles III is on the money For decades most Britons came into daily contact with their queen by handling notes and coins bearing Elizabeth II’s face. On Wednesday the keenest notaphilists can queue at the Bank of England to get the first banknotes featuring King Charles III. Elizabeth was the first British royal to appear on paper currency. Her final portrait, made in 1990 when she was 64, appeared on notes until her death in 2022. Charles, too, will probably remain frozen in late-middle age. Although the king was 73 on the day of his coronation, his monetary image is based on a photograph taken ten years before. Britons will see far less of him than they did of his mother. Many no longer carry cash. And the late queen’s notes will not be taken out of circulation unless they are damaged—a rare occurrence, since they are made from a durable polymer. Wallets will continue to hold Elizabeth’s image alongside her son’s, and perhaps even that of the monarch who succeeds him. 【参考译文】查尔斯三世登上英国纸币 【逐句分析】 ①For decades most Britons came into daily contact with their queen by handling notes and coins bearing Elizabeth II’s face. Although the king was 73 on the day of his coronation, his monetary image is based on a photograph taken ten years before. Royal: n. 国王的;皇家的;王室的 The royal family/household 皇室; the Royal Navy 皇家海军 Currency: n. SYN depiction. <a portrait of life at the French court>对法国宫廷生活的详细描述 Coronation: n. 加冕;加冕典礼 ③Britons will see far less of him than they did of his mother. Hey guys! It's June 13th, 2024. Today’s news is about Samsung Electronics’ first-ever strike. Last week, the National Samsung Electronics Union had its first strike in the company’s 55-year history. What happened? What workers were asking for? Let’s find out from the news. The National Samsung Electronics Union, which accounts for about a fifth of Samsung Electronics’ total workforce, has called on its members to use annual leave to take Friday off. It will be the first industrial action in the South Korean technology giant’s 55-year history. Talks between the union and management have stalled over the amount of holiday workers receive, as well as the method used to calculate bonus payments. A subsidiary of Samsung Group, South Korea’s largest conglomerate, Samsung Electronics is one of the world’s biggest producers of memory chips, smartphones and televisions. While the disruptions from Friday’s walk-out may be minimal, the union has threatened a larger strike if its demands are not met. Samsung, which was fiercely anti-union until 2020, has little experience handling labour disputes. And the internal turbulence compounds its other recent woes. The firm has fallen behind SK Hynix, a local rival, in the race to produce chips used for artificial intelligence. 【逐句分析】 ①The National Samsung Electronics Union, which accounts for about a fifth of Samsung Electronics’ total workforce, has called on its members to use annual leave to take Friday off.
